Senjogahara: Choose a Marsh Walk from Akanuma
Choose an Akanuma boardwalk visit or the longer Yudaki-to-Akanuma forest-and-marsh walk, with the seasonal bus connection in view.

Senjogahara opens the forest into a broad marsh, with boardwalks keeping walkers above its fragile ground. Akanuma is the useful starting point for a visit built around the marsh itself. Choose an out-and-back from there when you want to control the length; choose the longer walk from Yudaki Falls to Akanuma for the transition from river forest to open wetland.
A base beside the marsh
The Nikko tourism association's Akanuma page identifies the Nature Information Center at the entrance to the Senjogahara trail. It has toilets and a bus waiting area, and supplies a practical place to obtain current trail conditions and select the permitted boardwalk section.
For a flexible visit, start here, follow the signed Senjogahara path and return along your outward route at the agreed time. You can spend longer at the open views without needing to reach a second bus stop. Agree a common turning point with your group rather than assuming the marsh is one short loop.
The forest-to-marsh outing
Nikko's detailed walk description begins at Yudaki Falls, follows the Yugawa River through forest and then reaches the raised marsh boardwalks. It gives about 2 hours to Akanuma, with a longer continuation to Ryuzu Falls. Keep Akanuma as the finish if that is the bus connection you have planned.
The early forest has shade and nearby water; the marsh offers a wider view and considerably less shade. A sun hat and water matter on a warm day even when much of the route is described as fairly flat. Stay on the boardwalks to protect the wetland.
Obtain the current map at Akanuma before selecting the longer traverse. Add waterfall time, the approach from the bus and pauses to the walking estimate. These stops are a reason to leave room in the day, rather than treat every gap between buses as available walking time.
Match the bus to the version
Akanuma is served by buses from Nikko toward Yumoto Onsen. Start with Tobu's Nikko bus information and follow its current seasonal timetable. For the Yudaki version, match the stop serving the falls to a return from Akanuma; for the shorter visit, use Akanuma both ways.
Winter changes both the surface and facilities; the tourism association notes winter closures of the information center and some trails. Obtain the day's route and wildlife guidance before leaving the entrance. For another Japanese waterside walk with a defined waterfall destination, compare Oirase Gorge.
