Tottori Sand Dunes: Walk to the Umanose Sea View
Choose Umanose’s sea-view ridge or a shorter entrance-area visit, with loose sand, the climb back from the beach and the visitor-center map in mind.

At Tottori Sand Dunes, Umanose, the “horse's back” ridge, gives the walk a clear destination: a high view over the sand to the Sea of Japan. Go toward the ridge when you want the climb and panorama. Stay closer to the main entrance when you prefer the dune shapes without the full effort of climbing loose sand.
Choose the ridge before the beach
The prefectural tourism guide identifies Umanose as the ocean-view hill. The ridge itself can be the turning point. Descending the seaward side to the beach adds ground that must be climbed again on the return, so make that second decision after reaching the view.
On sand, progress feels different from a firm path. Each uphill step can slip back, and the return may include climbing rather than a simple downhill finish. Allow your group to choose the ridge or entrance-area version together before spreading out.
The attraction is more than reaching the highest available point. Wind-made ripples, the curves between ridges and the contrast between sand and water give a short visit plenty to look at. Keep away from vegetation and respect the protected landscape around the open sand.
Begin with the visitor-center map
The Tottori Sand Dunes Visitor Center offers free exploration and highlight maps. Collect one before walking, identify your entrance and use it to locate Umanose and the return. This makes a flexible dune visit easier to manage without imposing a distance that will change with the line you take.
The center's website also links current wind information. Check wind and heat before committing to the ridge: there is little shelter once you leave the buildings. Carry drinking water, sun protection and footwear appropriate to the sand temperature. A short distance can still be tiring in those conditions.
The prefectural guide describes a wooden ramp from the municipal parking area to the dunes' entrance, plus specialized sand-wheelchair loans. That is useful access information for the entrance visit; arrange the equipment directly and discuss the terrain you want to cover before assuming it extends to the ridge.
Keep the return easy to find
JNTO identifies buses from Tottori station to the dune area. Obtain the day's return departure at arrival, then keep time for walking back from the sand and cleaning your footwear before boarding.
Use the same entrance for your return unless you have deliberately planned another exit. The visitor center states that sand graffiti and writing messages are prohibited by ordinance, so leave the dune surface as you found it. For a day with mixed walking ambitions, set the group pace before the steeper sand separates everyone.
