Shiratani Unsuikyo: Cedar Loop or Taiko Iwa?
Compare Shiratani’s usual cedar and Taiko Iwa courses, with the announced October reopening, remaining trail closures and return transport kept in view.

Shiratani Unsuikyo brings Yakushima's old cedars, mossy stones and mountain streams into one forest outing. Under normal conditions, the Yayoi-sugi course is the shorter choice; Taiko Iwa adds a longer climb to a rocky viewpoint. Current closures change that choice.
Access update, October 16, 2026: the forest management council has announced reopening for October 18 at 08:00 after typhoon damage. Its notice says parts of the Yayoi-sugi course will remain closed, along with Hiryubashi Bridge, the Hiryu footpath and an entrance section beyond the second parking area. The Taiko Iwa return course and Bugyosugi course have been restored. Do not plan the complete Yayoi-sugi loop from the usual course description below. Check the council's latest notice and permitted entrance route before traveling; the announced reopening is still ahead of this review date.
The usual course choices
Yakushima town's course list gives 2 km (1.2 mi), about 1 hour for Yayoi-sugi, compared with 5.6 km (3.5 mi), about 4 hours for Taiko Iwa. These are normal-course profiles, not measurements of the partially closed routes. When fully open, the shorter course makes more room for pauses beside old trees; the longer one gives the climb and mountain view a central place.
The Environment Ministry's Yayoi-sugi description traces a return to the administration-building entrance via the cedar and Ikoi-no-oiwa Rock. That normal circuit includes stone-paved and wooden walkways, with steep wooden steps; the current closures mean it cannot be followed in full. A shorter outing still requires steady footing.
What you gain by going farther
Moss, ferns, large stones and mountain streams give the ravine its close forest detail. JNTO describes Taiko Iwa as a rocky viewpoint with steep sections on the approach. It adds a wider mountain perspective to that enclosed setting.
Choose it for a day with time to climb and return, and weather that makes the viewpoint worthwhile. At the entrance, take the current course map and confirm which water crossings and sections are usable after rain. A closed crossing changes the available course; select a permitted alternative or postpone.
Compare the walk with the bus window
The usual entrance is beside Shiratani Unsuikyo stop No. 29. The municipal access page identifies Yakushima Kotsu and Matsubanda Kotsu as bus operators. Its timetable is not confirmation that buses will restart with the forest. Confirm resumed service and the dated operator timetable before choosing an arrival or buying a pass.
For Taiko Iwa after reopening, allow the published four-hour course estimate plus entry, pauses, slower sections and time before boarding the return. Choose your arrival by working backward from a confirmed departure. A taxi arrangement also needs a confirmed open road and permitted drop-off; it does not bypass a closure.
If you want only a short forest visit, ask the management council which shortened walk is currently permitted and how it returns to the entrance. Until that is established, do not substitute the one-hour Yayoi-sugi figure for the altered route. Use the day-hike checklist for rain layers and footwear.
