Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha is a manageable way to give the Kumano Kodo a day of its own. The walk passes through villages, cultivated slopes and forest before reaching the shrine at Hongu. Stay in the Hongu area, take a bus to the start and walk back toward the place where you will spend the afternoon.

This guide covers that one section of the Nakahechi route. It is a complete day-walk choice; you do not need to add another mountain crossing to make the visit count.

The walk, in order

From Hosshinmon-oji, the route follows the road through the village to Mizunomi-oji, then enters forest before reaching Fushiogami's tea fields and terraced land. Beyond Fushiogami-oji, it descends through forest past Sangen-jaya toward Kumano Hongu Taisha. Detailed route description.

That mix is the appeal of the day: the pilgrimage path runs through inhabited country as well as woodland. Keep stops considerate around homes and fields, and give the shrine visit its own time after the walk.

Route detailPublished course information
StartHosshinmon-oji
FinishKumano Hongu Taisha; nearby bus stop Hongu Taisha-mae
DistanceAbout 7.5 km (4.7 mi), one way
Walking estimate2–3 hours; individual pace varies
Total ascentAbout 190 m (620 ft)
Total descentAbout 460 m (1,510 ft)

These figures come from the tourism bureau's detailed course page. The descent exceeds the ascent, but the route still includes climbing. Allow additional time for food, viewpoints and the shrine rather than treating the walking estimate as the entire outing.

Put the bus before the walk

The Tanabe City Kumano Tourism Bureau recommends an overnight in the Hongu area for this half-day route, including Yunomine, Kawayu or Watarase Onsen. That arrangement gives you a local start instead of combining a long arrival with the walk. Suggested Kumano Kodo walks.

Use timetable 6 on the bureau's bus page for the journey to Hosshinmon-oji. The linked edition checked on October 15, 2026 is dated September 19, 2026 and distinguishes seasonal and day-specific services. Read your departure stop and Hosshinmon-oji arrival in the same service column. A bus toward Hongu does not necessarily continue to the trailhead. Kumano bus timetables.

After the walk, your next journey begins at Hongu, not Hosshinmon-oji. Arrange the bus to your accommodation or onward destination from that end. If your plans require returning to the start, solve that before setting out; our point-to-point transport guide explains the choice.

Bring lunch and water rather than making the walk depend on a refreshment stop being open. The bureau notes that service at the Fushiogami rest area varies. A stop you can make with what you are carrying is easier to fit around the pace of the day.

Make Hongu the afternoon, not another deadline

Leave time to visit Kumano Hongu Taisha after arriving. If you are staying nearby, you can finish the walk without immediately racing for a long onward journey. If you are leaving the region that day, settle the departure first and protect enough time to reach it.

The Dainichi-goe route between Hongu and Yunomine is a separate climb and descent over a pass. Do not append it simply because the accommodation is on the other side. The bureau describes it as steep in either direction. Taking a bus can be the right end to this walking day. Hongu-area walk descriptions.

Before travel, consult the bureau's route information and notices alongside the latest bus sheet. If weather or a closure rules out the trail, keep the shrine visit and a Hongu-area stay as a smaller plan, subject to local access. Add the chosen walk and overnight to your trip worksheet so the next day's departure is part of the same plan.
