Kamikochi: Riverside Walks in the Japanese Alps
Choose a Kamikochi valley walk between Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge and Myojin, with named distances and the Matsumoto bus connections that shape your day.

Kamikochi lets you spend a day beside the Azusa River with mountain views above the valley floor. For a first visit, choose either the walk from Taisho Pond toward Kappa Bridge or the circuit upstream to Myojin. Giving one of these routes the day leaves room for the water, woods and stops that brought you here.
Taisho Pond is the stronger choice if you want a changing sequence of pond, marsh and river scenery. Myojin suits a day centered on a longer walk away from the bus-accessible part of the valley. These are valley outings; a climb into the surrounding peaks is a different trip.
Choose your part of the valley
The official walking guide gives detailed distances for each bank of the river. The figures below describe those named walks, with time for lunch and photographs still to add. Kamikochi walking routes.
| Walk | Published distance | How to use it in a day |
|---|---|---|
| Taisho Pond to Kappa Bridge | 3.8 km (2.4 mi) via the right bank; 4 km (2.5 mi) via the left bank, one way | Leave the inbound bus at Taisho-ike and walk toward the central valley |
| Kappa Bridge to Myojin and back on opposite banks | 5.5 km (3.4 mi) total | Arrive at the bus terminal, reach Kappa Bridge and make the upstream circuit |
On the Taisho route, Tashiro Pond and the bridges provide smaller landmarks between the two better-known ends. Around Myojin, the pond, bridge and shrine give the walk its focus. A photograph of a clear mountain reflection is a reason to be interested, rather than something the day owes you.
For the shortest visit, arrive at the terminal and keep your walk near Kappa Bridge. You can pause by the river without committing to the full Myojin circuit. Decide whether to extend the walk while you still have the choice of an easy return toward your departure point.
From Matsumoto, reserve both bus journeys
Alpico lists the 2026 Matsumoto–Kamikochi season as April 17 through November 15. Its Japanese timetable gives priority to passengers with reservations; boarding without one depends on seats remaining. Reserve both bus journeys so the walk has a clear beginning and end. Alpico's current timetable and boarding rules.
The usual connecting journey combines the Kamikochi Line train from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima with a bus into the valley. That train is separate from JR. Direct outbound buses are also listed, but the operator does not list a direct return bus to Matsumoto. English route and booking guide.
Match the inbound booking to your walk: Taisho-ike for the one-way pond route, or Kamikochi Bus Terminal for the central valley and Myojin. Keep the return terminal, departure and train connection together in your notes. The walking day ends when you reach that departure point, not when you take your last photograph at the bridge.
If you drive, the official access guide directs private cars to Sawando on the eastern approach or Hirayu on the western approach, followed by a bus or taxi. Allow for that transfer when comparing driving with a car-free nature trip. Kamikochi access.
Leave room between the walk and the bus
Work backward from the return you have booked. Put your meal and river stops inside the time available, then choose the walk that fits. Combining Taisho, Myojin and a farther extension can turn a gentle-looking map into a day spent watching the clock.
Before leaving your base, use the destination's notices and the operator's service information for the trail and bus conditions that apply that day. The seasonal bus dates above do not describe a winter walking service. If the valley journey is unavailable, keep the day around your base instead of improvising a mountain approach.
Add the chosen walk, arrival stop and return departure to your trip worksheet. If you tend to add just one more viewpoint, set a turnaround time before you start.
