Checking the route

Eorimok to Witse Oreum is a Hallasan day for forest, a steep middle climb and open upland scenery. It does not reach Baengnokdam, the summit crater. Choose a same-trail return so your descent brings you back to Eorimok, rather than leaving you at Yeongsil or Donnaeko with another transfer to solve.

Stop at Witse Oreum

The park route places Witse Oreum 4.7 km (2.9 mi), about two hours one way from Eorimok. Returning on the same trail is 9.4 km (5.8 mi); the descent and pauses must be added to the outward time. The longer 6.8 km figure on the page reaches the South Wall junction, beyond this plan.

The route begins around 970 m (3,180 ft), climbs through Eorimok Valley and steep Sajebi Dongsan, then crosses more open terrain toward the shelter around 1,700 m (5,580 ft). Those are elevations, not a measured cumulative ascent. Cloud, lightning and rapid weather changes can affect the uplands. Bring water rather than relying on a spring that can dry up.

Start early, confirm the current controls

Eorimok does not require the summit-route reservation used on Seongpanak and Gwaneumsa. That exemption does not remove entry controls or weather closures.

The park’s 30 September 2026 winter notice sets October–March entry at Eorimok from 5am until noon, with final descent from Witse Oreum at 3pm. The 1pm control at Witse applies to continuing toward the South Wall, beyond this plan. These dated rules take priority over the older three-season table still present in the general guide.

Choose a morning start with room for the full return and stops. Noon is the entrance cutoff, not a recommended starting time: the published two-hour ascent would leave only about one hour at Witse before the 3pm descent deadline. Ask Eorimok office, +82 64 713 9950–1, about current conditions before departure.

Weather warnings can bring partial or full closure. Check Hallasan’s current notices on the day. Arrange arrival and departure at Eorimok’s actual trailhead; the roadside bus stop adds an approach walk. Confirm current bus access before leaving your base. Cooking and camping are prohibited on this route, and disposable lunch boxes are banned; carry suitable food and water without planning a stove stop.
