Vintgar Gorge: The Walk, Shuttle and Return Path
Plan the one-way Vintgar Gorge walk and King of Triglav return, including the Bled or VINTGAR LIP shuttle and time beyond the gorge.

Vintgar is a one-way walk through the Radovna gorge followed by a longer walk back over Hom Hill. The gorge's 1.6 km (1 mi) is only the first part: the operator's King of Triglav return makes the complete circuit 5.7 km (3.5 mi). Allow at least three hours for that circuit, then add your shuttle journeys.
Wooden walkways carry you beside the river to Šum Waterfall. The return changes the scenery to woods, pastures and hillside views. Choose the visit for both parts of the day: you cannot walk a little way into the gorge and retrace your steps when you have seen enough. Official route and visitor FAQ.
Book the entrance, then work backward
Buy a timed All-in-One Pass online. Physical tickets are sold at Central Parking VINTGAR LIP, before boarding the shuttle; they are not sold at the VINTGAR Visitor Centre. Without a reservation, the next available entry may involve a wait. Individual-visit information.
If arriving by car, head to the official VINTGAR LIP parking area rather than the gorge entrance. The operator asks you to reach the parking area at least 40 minutes before your slot. Its published parking allowance is four hours, so a long lunch or a slower circuit deserves a question to staff before you leave the hub. Official access information, in Slovenian.
From Bled, start at the Central Bus Station. The VINTGAR shuttle takes you to VINTGAR LIP, where you change to the shuttle for the Visitor Centre. That transfer is part of the journey even though the attraction is nearby. Keep the arrival time of any public bus into Bled separate from your gorge entry time.
Follow the whole circuit
At the Visitor Centre, collect the required helmet and follow staff instructions for entry. Through the gorge, stay with the permitted direction to Šum. From there, take the King of Triglav Trail back to the Visitor Centre or VINTGAR Shuttle Terminal.
The operator's individual-visit page separates the two walking sections:
| Section | Published distance | Published walking estimate |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor Centre through the gorge to Šum Waterfall | 1.6 km (1 mi) | About 45 minutes |
| King of Triglav return to the starting area | 4.1 km (2.5 mi) | Around two hours |
These estimates explain why a “45-minute gorge visit” leaves too much of the outing uncounted. Stops, visitor flow and your own pace can extend the circuit. The waterfall is the end of the gorge passage, not the point where your car or Bled bus is waiting.
This guide uses the King of Triglav circuit. Do not substitute another return name from an older itinerary without checking where it ends and which transport it meets. The trail-description guide explains how to compare routes with different endpoints.
Return to the hub you used
After reaching the Visitor Centre area, take the shuttle back to VINTGAR LIP. Drivers retrieve the car there. For Bled, change at LIP to the Bled shuttle.
The dedicated official shuttle page lists LIP services about every seven minutes and Bled services about every 15 minutes during operation, with return services running until two hours after gorge closing. Those are service intervals, not your own guaranteed connection. Choose a morning or early slot while the late-season closing time is 15:00. With returns listed until two hours after closing, the published shuttle window ends at 17:00. A 14:00 entry followed by the minimum three-hour circuit reaches the starting area at 17:00, leaving no allowance for a slower walk or boarding; a 15:00 entry reaches it around 18:00. Neither works as a comfortable plan using that published window.
This calculation is not an operator-imposed last-entry rule. Before buying a late slot, ask Vintgar staff how the complete circuit and your return to LIP or Bled will fit that day's services. An available ticket alone does not resolve that journey.
An illustrative schedule makes the difference clear: for a 10:00 entry, a driver should reach LIP by 09:20 under the operator's arrival advice. A three-hour circuit would bring you back around 13:00, before the shuttle ride and car retrieval. This is arithmetic for planning, not an appointment promised by the operator. Add waiting, the ride to LIP and car retrieval; Bled passengers also need the change and second ride. Do not book an onward departure at the circuit's estimated finish time. If the full sequence leaves too little room, choose an earlier slot or another day.
Check the day's opening and walking requirements
On 16 October 2026, the opening-hours page displayed an open status and a late-season schedule of 09:00–15:00 from 21 September until season end. It did not give a fixed closing date for the season. Use that page and the ticket calendar for your actual date; the daily closing time also determines the published shuttle-return window.
Wear suitable hiking shoes and the supplied helmet. The route has steps and narrow sections, and strollers and wheelchairs cannot use it. The operator does not recommend the visit for children under three. Bring a rain layer: rain does not automatically close the gorge, while severe weather can change access. These conditions belong in the decision before buying the slot, rather than being a surprise at the entrance.
For a group that wants a short walk with an early turnaround, choose a different outing. For a group happy to continue beyond the river, keep the complete circuit and both shuttle legs together in the day's plan.
