Paiva Walkways: Choose Your Direction and Return
Choose Areinho or Espiunca for the Paiva Walkways, understand the stairs and linear distance, and arrange the taxi return before booking.

The Paiva Walkways follow the river through a steep-sided valley, using wooden stairs and platforms to cross ground that would otherwise make slow progress. For a one-way day, Areinho to Espiunca is the municipality's less physically demanding direction. Choose your return arrangement before buying the entrance ticket, because the ticket is tied to a starting gate.
Why the direction matters
The municipal route page lists 8.7 km (5.4 mi), linear, with an average duration of 2 hours 30 minutes and high difficulty. Its introductory text rounds the distance to 8 km; use the more specific route figure for planning. Even the easier direction includes substantial stairs and changes of level.
Areinho gives you the generally downstream outing toward Espiunca. Reversing it puts more of the climbing into the walk. Walking both ways creates roughly 17.4 km (10.8 mi) before extra movement around the entrances; the municipality recommends Espiunca as the start for that version. A return walk should be a deliberate longer day, rather than a solution discovered after reaching the wrong end of the car journey.
The river and gorge are the focus. Vau lies between the endpoints and provides a natural place to pause, rather than treating the boards as a corridor to hurry through. Carry water and footwear for stairs; beach footwear is poorly suited to the walking surface.
Put the car at the useful end
The municipality identifies parking at both ends and taxis as a way to transfer between them. Its FAQ transfer section also describes taxis at the endpoints. Contact the Arouca tourism office through the current municipal page to obtain the local arrangement for your date.
One useful order is to leave the vehicle at Espiunca and take the agreed taxi to Areinho before walking. You then finish beside your car. The other is to park at Areinho and meet the taxi at Espiunca afterward. The first removes the end-of-walk wait; the second may suit a prearranged pickup. Agree the fare, meeting place and contact method directly with the service.
Reserve the actual outing
Enter the booking system from the current municipal home page. Select the visit date and gate that match your transfer. The separate 516 Arouca bridge is an additional attraction; decide explicitly whether you want it when selecting tickets and allocating time.
Before departure, check the operator's notices and opening hours for the usable section. A booking does not override a closure. On the route, the municipal instruction is to turn back if you encounter obstacles or a landslide, rather than go around it. That makes a flexible pickup arrangement useful after bad weather. The point-to-point planning guide helps coordinate that arrangement for a group.
