Ozegahara from Hatomachitoge: Leave Time for the Climb Back
Choose a marsh visit around Yamanohana, with seasonal transport and the uphill return to Hatomachitoge.

Hatomachitoge is above Ozegahara. You descend through forest to Yamanohana before reaching the marsh, then climb back to catch your transport. For a first visit with limited walking time, make Yamanohana and its nearby Research Exhibition Garden the focus. The wetland is still the destination; a distant circuit is not required to see it.
A smaller marsh outing
The Oze Preservation Foundation recommends the Research Exhibition Garden, or Kenkyu-mihon-en, for visitors with limited time. Turn left at Yamanohana to reach this naturally formed marsh. Stay on its marked boardwalks and return to Yamanohana before taking the forest path uphill to Hatomachitoge.
This smaller marsh section does not remove the approach from the pass. The foundation’s English hiking leaflet, marked March 2020, estimates about 60 minutes from Hatomachitoge to Ozegahara; that is an outward approach, not the whole visit or an uphill return estimate. Allow more than a quick stop at the marsh when deciding whether this day fits your group. Ask at Yamanohana Visitor Center about the current garden path before starting it.
For a longer walk, the main Ozegahara boardwalk continues toward Ushikubi and the Ryugu junction. Decide on that extension after considering the time already used descending from the pass, and use the current map and notices. Keep the return through Yamanohana fixed; do not assume the marsh paths make a short loop back to Hatomachitoge.
Tokura is the road connection
The foundation’s current access page directs drivers to Oze Dai-ichi parking in Tokura, then a paid shared bus or taxi to Hatomachitoge. It lists private-car and motorcycle parking at the pass as unavailable. Public-transport approaches also run through Tokura from Jomo-Kogen or Numata.
Use Kan-etsu’s Tokura–Hatomachitoge page to choose your outward and return services for the date, then check the onward connection from Tokura. If you cannot confirm a return that leaves enough time for the uphill walk and a wait at the pass, shorten the marsh extension or choose another day. Carry cash for transport and do not rely on finding a late unscheduled ride.
Late October changes the visit
The October 15, 2026 season-end notice gives November 3 as the planned final day of Tokura–Hatomachitoge shuttle operation. It says huts and toilets begin closing from October 17–18, with most huts finishing October 24–25. A running bus does not mean all services remain open.
The September 28 facilities schedule gives Yamanohana Visitor Center a planned October 31 closure, with 15:00 closing and a reduced exhibition from October 19. Dates can move earlier. The October 17 visitor-center report warns of frost and frozen, slippery boardwalks. Bring warm layers and rain protection, and read the current report before leaving Tokura.
For this short marsh choice, confirm the garden is open as well as the approach. If conditions require a faster pace than your group can comfortably manage, turn back at Yamanohana. Planning a turnaround time helps keep the climb back within the day you actually have.
