Checking the route

Choose Trail 1 for Takao's temple-and-viewpoint day, with the option of using the cable car for part of the climb. Choose Trail 6 when the forest and stream are the main reason for walking. Both lead toward the summit, but they give the ascent a different character.

The temple route

JNTO's Takao guide identifies Trail 1 with the mountain's nature and history, including Yakuoin Temple. The railway's course list gives its full length as 3.8 km (2.4 mi). This is the full trail, so riding partway up changes the walking distance you actually cover.

Trail 1 suits a day with pauses for the temple, views and facilities. Use the official English trail map to orient yourself between the temple, numbered trails and cable-car stations.

The cable car runs from Kiyotaki to Takaosan station, midway up the mountain. Its upper station connects with Trail 1; it does not deposit you at the summit. Include the onward walk and the return to that station when planning a cable-car descent.

The forest route

Trail 6, also called the Biwa Waterfall trail, is 3.3 km (2.1 mi) on the railway's course list. It passes Biwa Waterfall and follows a forest-and-water setting. This is the stronger choice when you want the ascent itself to occupy your attention, rather than building the day around temple stops.

A slightly shorter distance does not make it the gentler version. Conditions underfoot and any temporary one-way arrangement matter, so check the current course notices before selecting a descent. Trail 1 provides a different experience on the return if that connection is open and suits your plan.

Build the day from Takaosanguchi

Arrive at Takaosanguchi, rather than ending your rail plan at Takao station. From there, orient yourself toward the lower cable-car area and the numbered trail you chose.

The operator's timetable gives different finishing hours for the cable car and chair lift. For September–November it currently lists the cable car's last departure as 17:45 on weekdays and 18:00 on weekends and holidays, subject to exceptions and maintenance notices. Use your actual date and leave queue time before the departure you need.

For a less walking-heavy day, ride up and concentrate on Trail 1's temple section. For a hiking day, start Trail 6 early enough to return on foot if that is your chosen plan. Both versions still leave the train connection home to arrange through the Japan rail-planning guide.
