Magome to Tsumago combines two old post towns with the wooded stretch of the Nakasendo between them. Make time for both ends: the sloping stone street in Magome and the wooden inns and houses of Tsumago are part of the day, rather than entrances to a trail you need to finish quickly.

The route is about 8 km (5 mi), with a published walking estimate of two to three hours. That leaves town visits, food and transport outside the walking allowance. Nagano's tourism guide describes forest, small settlements and fields along the way, with Magome Pass between the towns. Nagano's Nakasendo guide.

Start with Magome, finish with Tsumago

This plan travels from Nakatsugawa Station to Magome, walks to Tsumago and leaves through Nagiso Station. It gives you a different town at each end and avoids walking the same trail twice.

The path still climbs toward Magome Pass before descending on the other side. Choosing Magome as the start does not turn the outing into an entirely downhill stroll. A stone street, forest path and road connection can also feel different underfoot even when their distances look similar on a map.

The timetable currently linked by the Tsumago Tourism Association is dated April 1, 2026. It includes the Magome–Nakatsugawa and Tsumago–Nagiso connections, with weekday, holiday and seasonal exceptions. Use the row for your date rather than assuming every listed journey runs daily. If your overnight base makes the reverse direction more convenient, reverse the transport plan as well. Decide that before booking a departure from the far end. Our point-to-point logistics guide helps when the walk ends somewhere different from your bag or car.

Keep the towns inside the day

In Magome, the street rises between dark timber and white plaster facades, with views across the surrounding hills from its upper end. In Tsumago, the interest is closer: the row of wooden buildings, their entrances and the way the former post road runs through the settlement. The walk connects those two settings through the Kiso countryside. Post towns and trail context.

Give yourself permission to stop before a bus deadline makes the second town an afterthought. If the available transport leaves little time at Tsumago, shorten the day's ambition to one town and a local walk. That can be a better fit than completing the crossing and immediately leaving.

Give the luggage its own route

The Magome Tourism Association lists Magome-juku BASE as a visitor information point offering bag storage and delivery. Confirm the service date, drop-off deadline, destination and collection time with the center before relying on a transfer. Magome visitor information.

Storage and delivery solve different problems. A stored bag stays behind; a delivered bag has a collection point and a deadline at the far end. If you will return to the same accommodation, leaving your larger luggage there may simplify the day. For an onward journey, use our Japan luggage guide to arrange where it will meet you.

Take the current walking map from the local visitor information page and ask about trail notices before setting off, particularly after bad weather or in winter. Then carry what you need for the walk and leave enough time to enjoy the town waiting at the other end.
