The Hermitage: Black Linn Falls and a Woodland Circuit
Start at the Hermitage lower car park for Ossian’s Hall, then choose the short return or the 2.7 km circuit through the woods.

Make Ossian's Hall and Black Linn Falls the center of a Hermitage visit. Start at the lower car park, follow the signed woodland path to the hall, then decide whether to return or continue to Ossian's Cave and complete the woodland circuit.
The River Braan runs beneath tall Douglas firs before dropping through the falls. Ossian's Hall is a deliberately placed viewpoint in a designed landscape: the building frames the water and makes its sound part of the visit. You can make that your main stop without adding a longer excursion toward Rumbling Bridge.
Choose the hall approach at the first fork
The Trust's detailed walking description starts in the lower car park and passes under the railway bridge. At the fork, the riverside Forest Cathedral route goes left; the wider approach signed Ossian's Hall goes right.
The Forest Cathedral branch reaches the Douglas fir grove and then uses uneven steps toward the falls and hall. Choose the wider signed hall approach if you need to avoid those steps, and check the current access information for your specific mobility requirements. The Trust describes the accessible trail as ending at the hall, with return on the wide track.
One view or the woodland circuit
For the main waterfall visit, spend time at the hall and return to the lower car park. If it is closed for an event, the Trust identifies an alternative outside view past the front door and wildflower plot; follow the current signs there.
For more walking, continue toward Ossian's Cave and return on the Hermitage Circuit past the totem pole. The complete published circuit is 2.7 km (1.7 mi), with 65 m (210 ft) of ascent and about one hour's walking. Stops at the falls and cave add to that allowance.
Rumbling Bridge is a separate extension beyond the cave, with a longer walking commitment. At the cave, choose the circuit return deliberately rather than continuing up the gorge just because the path goes on.
Start at the woodland, then add the journey
The upper car park adds stairs down to the lower start. Accessible parking is in the lower area by the railway bridge, according to the Trust. Use the Hermitage visitor page for current site and parking information.
A train arrival at Dunkeld & Birnam is a different starting point. This guide's distances begin at the Hermitage lower car park; arrange the connection to it separately if arriving by rail. That keeps the short woodland outing from acquiring an uncounted approach and return.
Allow time to look up among the trees as well as down into the river. For a slower group outing, our mixed-pace guide helps you agree on the hall as a shared destination before deciding who wants the longer circuit.
