Checking the route

Walking from Furnas makes the lake part of a valley outing. Arriving at the lakeshore instead keeps the day focused on the water and geothermal area. Choose the village circuit for the connection between settlement, hillside and lake; choose a lake visit if you want more time at individual shore attractions.

What the full walk includes

The official PRC06SMI route starts by the parking area near Largo das Três Bicas, at the entrance to Furnas. It is a 9.4 km (5.8 mi) circuit, listed as easy with an average of 3 hours. That is the village-and-lake route, not a measurement of an isolated stroll along the shore.

The marked line passes Igreja de Santana and Poça da Dona Beija, then continues toward Pico do Milho for a view over the Furnas valley. It follows the road to the lake. This approach gives you the relationship between Furnas and its surrounding volcanic landscape before you reach the water.

Along the lake

At the lake, the described route turns left along the cobbled road. It passes the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias, Mata Jardim José do Canto and Casa dos Barcos. Farther on is the Furnas Environmental Interpretation Centre, followed by a flatter dirt section along the bank.

The geothermal Caldeiras area adds another reason to pause: the volcanic heat is used in preparing the traditional cozido meal. Viewing this activity is different from having a restaurant booking. If eating cozido is central to your visit, arrange that meal separately rather than assuming a walking route includes it.

Passing an attraction on the trail also does not establish free entry to its interior or garden. Decide which paid or timed visits you want before adding their time to the walking day. The official trail description mentions a ticket-booth area but does not settle every attraction's admission conditions.

The return is part of the choice

After Caldeiras, PRC06SMI returns toward the regional road and follows it back to the village. Azores Trails explicitly asks for care on this road section. The complete outing is therefore not an all-day waterside path. If avoiding road walking is a priority, a lake-focused visit with arrival and departure at the same confirmed shore access is the more suitable format; do not count it as the published 9.4 km circuit.

ChooseWhat it addsWhat to arrange
Village circuitFurnas streets, Pico do Milho and the lake sequenceReturn at the village; time for the road section
Lake-focused visitMore time for shore stops and chosen attractionsConfirm the exact lake access and pickup; separate admissions

Check the trail page and notices for your date. If arriving by bus, match your return departure to Furnas village rather than assuming the lake and village share one stop. For a day with several pauses, the photography-stop guide helps decide which ones deserve time instead of treating every landmark as a quick addition.
