McLaren Falls Park offers a small forest-and-stream outing from the Waterfall Track car park. Choose the short waterfall loop if you want a walk before a picnic; keep to the lower StoryWalk section if stairs would change the day for your group. The waterfall inside the park is the focus here, rather than a long circuit linking its hills and lake shore.

Follow the stream from the car park

The council’s walkway guide describes the Waterfall Track as a roughly twenty-minute loop beside both banks of a small stream, reaching a waterfall and platform. Return on the other bank where the signed loop permits.

The current park page makes the surface choice clearer: StoryWalk begins near the car park on a wide, flat gravel path along the stream’s left side; beyond its end, stairs continue to the waterfall before the path loops back. If you need the level section, turn back before those stairs. An older blanket wheelchair description should not be read as a promise for the entire waterfall loop.

Ponga Grove Track is closed until further notice, and the Lakeside Track has a diversion below Hamilton Point. The longer advertised park loop uses those links, so it is not the extension to add casually after the waterfall. Keep this visit beside the stream and return to the same car park.

Park vehicle hours are 7:30am–7:30pm during daylight saving and 7:30am–5:30pm outside it. An after-dark glowworm plan can conflict with the vehicle gate; choose a daylight visit unless you separately arrange permitted access and departure. Dogs are prohibited even inside vehicles.

Read the park notice before traveling. Orange rain or wind warnings can close sections; a red severe-weather warning closes the entire park until hazards have been assessed. Call the council on +64 7 577 7000 if your required section or access arrangement is unclear. A short loop still needs a confirmed way out before the gates close.
