Sankeien: A Garden Walk Beyond Central Yokohama
Give Sankeien time for both gardens, distinguish outdoor views from building entry and plan the bus back.

Allow a proper walking visit at Sankeien rather than treating it as a quick stop beside Yokohama station. The garden is in Honmoku, reached by a separate bus journey. Its pond views, slopes and historic buildings reward time on foot, but a building on the map does not necessarily have an open interior.
Outer pond, inner garden
The garden’s own description distinguishes the Outer Garden, opened to the public in 1906, from the former private Inner Garden. The outer area is arranged around flowers, the pond and the three-story pagoda. The inner area is more closely composed around historic architecture, especially Rinshunkaku.
For a first visit, use the operator’s 90–120-minute course. It passes the main pond, Rinshunkaku and Choshukaku, then continues toward the higher viewpoints and pagoda. Gravel paths and slopes make this more walking than a flat courtyard visit. The separate barrier-free course also has a 90–120-minute estimate; ask for that route if slopes or steps would limit the ordinary course.
Some details change seasonally. The walking path by Choshukaku opens only during the fresh-green and autumn-color periods. Do not count on every path shown in a general garden description being open on your date.
One familiar interior is closed for work
The regular course page still describes the old Yanohara House as a building visitors can enter. A separate January 20, 2026 notice suspends its public opening from January 21 for roof and seismic work, planned through the end of March 2027. Follow that dated notice when planning an October 2026 visit. You can still plan a garden walk without making this interior its centerpiece.
Standard opening is 09:00–17:00, with last admission at 16:30. A last-admission ticket does not leave enough time for the full 90–120-minute course. Arrive earlier and finish the walk before the garden closes; special evening events have their own arrangements.
Take the bus to Honmoku and walk to Main Gate
One operator-published option is bus 101 from Sakuragicho station, stop 11, to Honmoku, followed by roughly ten minutes on foot to Main Gate. The access diagram shows a connection through Kannai as well. Check current municipal bus times before using it.
For the return, leave through Main Gate, walk back to the Honmoku stop for the station-bound direction and confirm the destination before boarding. Keep the garden exit and bus walk in your connection time; choosing a South Gate exit would change that return. A simple same-gate visit is useful when you are unfamiliar with the neighborhood.
For footwear, think gravel paths and hill sections, then choose the appropriate course. Our day-hike footwear guide explains the terrain-based decision without turning a garden visit into a mountain expedition.
