Curú: Choose a Forest Walk and Time by the Bay
Build a Curú day from Paquera around a short forest circuit and the main beach, with Quesera treated as a separate reserved outing.

At Curú, you can keep forest walking and time by the bay in the same visit. For a first day from Paquera, choose a shorter named trail, return to the visitor area and leave time for the main beach. Playa Quesera is a longer, separately reserved choice.
The refuge lies on the southern Nicoya Peninsula. Its mix of forest, mangrove habitat, farmland and coast gives the day a different shape from a boat trip to Isla Tortuga. Tell the provider you want to visit Curú itself when arranging transport.
Choose one short trail first
The refuge’s own trail descriptions identify useful starting options with explicit return estimates:
| Option | Operator’s published measure | What it adds to the day |
|---|---|---|
| Toledo | 1.2 km (0.7 mi), about 45 minutes return | A short forest circuit |
| Estuary suspension bridge | 450 m (about 0.3 mi), about 20 minutes return | A short outing toward the estuary bridge |
| Cangrejal | 1.086 km (about 0.7 mi), about 45 minutes return | Walking near the estuary |
Ask at reception which of these is open and where it starts on the current map. Choose Toledo when a forest loop is the main walk; choose the bridge outing when you want to keep the walking portion shorter. The operator’s broad “easy” labels do not establish a step-free surface.
Finca de Los Monos is another forest option, but the bridge is also described as its beginning. Reaching the bridge does not commit you to the longer trail. Keep your chosen endpoint clear before continuing.
Leave Quesera its own place in the plan
Curú describes Quesera as a demanding walk of 5.1 km (3.2 mi), with about 1.5 hours per direction, requiring a reservation by phone. Discuss the complete distance and return route with the office: the page’s distance label does not explicitly say whether 5.1 km includes the return.
That is a different proposal from the short circuit plus main beach. Choose it because you specifically want Playa Quesera, with enough walking time on both sides of the beach pause. Do not attach it to a late arrival or a tight ferry connection.
The same page lists Killer and Avispero as temporarily closed after landslides, and the Mirador–Poza Colorada connection as closed. Use those notices as restrictions, not suggested shortcuts.
Start and finish in Paquera
Using Paquera as your base keeps the day independent of an unverified ferry connection. Arrange transport to Curú’s actual reception or visitor area and collection at the same agreed place. A roadside bus stop at the outer entrance leaves another approach to settle.
The refuge’s published contact is +506 6210 1724 and info@curuwildliferefuge.com. Confirm the entrance hours, current admission, final approach and permitted beach activities there. Day visitors must leave by 4 p.m.; only cabin guests may remain later under the refuge’s published management rule.
Enjoy the bay from shore if swimming conditions are unsuitable. The main reward remains a day where the forest and coast have time of their own. Our Manuel Antonio guide describes another forest-and-beach setting; choose the place that fits the wider journey rather than treating them as interchangeable excursions.
