Carara National Park: Choose a Short Forest Walk
Choose Carara’s Universal Access Trail or Las Aráceas from the main entrance, with online tickets, seasonal hours and a return to your vehicle or arranged pickup.

Go to Carara for time inside the forest, where plants from Costa Rica’s drier and wetter Pacific environments meet. The main-entrance trails give you a reason to stop and look at large trees, climbing plants and the canopy. A pause at the Tárcoles bridge is a different stop: it does not take you into the park.
For a first short visit, choose the Universal Access Trail as the main outing. Las Aráceas is another named forest circuit to consider at the entrance. Keep Laguna Meándrica out of this simple plan; it needs a separate decision about its entrance and current opening.
Arrive at the park entrance on Route 34
The Costa Rica Tourism Board places the main entrance 2 km (1.2 mi) south of the Río Grande de Tárcoles bridge, on the road toward Jacó. From San José, its driving directions use Route 27 toward Caldera, then Route 34 toward Tárcoles and Jacó. If traveling from Jacó, use the park entrance as the destination for the outward and return journey.
For the visit described here, arrive by your own vehicle or with a return pickup arranged in advance. Ask a driver to take you into the main visitor entrance and agree the pickup there. Do not substitute a bridge drop-off and an assumed roadside walk for this arrival plan. Public transportation may serve the corridor, but this guide does not establish a dated bus stop, safe crossing or return timetable.
The tourism board publishes daily opening hours of 7 a.m.–4 p.m. from December through April, and 8 a.m.–4 p.m. from May through November. Treat 4 p.m. as the end of the park day, with time to finish the trail and reach your transport beforehand.
Pick one trail as the reason for the visit
The Universal Access Trail is the stronger starting choice when your group wants a defined short route with resting places. SINAC’s park page describes it as about 1.2 km (0.7 mi), with nine rest bays and interpretation. The forest is the attraction here; take time at the stopping places rather than racing through to search for a second trail.
SINAC describes Las Aráceas as a circular trail of approximately 1.2 km (0.7 mi), taking about one hour. Its name refers to the plant family that includes Monstera, Anthurium and Philodendron. Look for the relationship between the trunks, plants growing on them and roots reaching down toward the soil. At reception, have staff point out its start and the route back to the visitor area before choosing it.
These are individual trail descriptions. They are not a measured combined circuit, so do not simply add the distances to create a complete main-entrance walking total.
What “Universal Access” helps you assess
SINAC’s accessibility information gives a more precise length of 1,172 m (3,845 ft) for the universal trail and lists ramps, tactile paving, curbs, tactile interpretation, accessible restrooms and parking access. The park page rounds the route to 1.2 km (0.7 mi); these descriptions do not require two different walks.
If you depend on a particular facility, contact the park before traveling. The tourism board lists +506 2637-1054. Ask whether the whole paved route is open, whether the parking-to-trail connection and adapted restroom are usable, and whether any mobility aid you need is available. Those answers determine whether the visit fits your needs; the trail’s name alone cannot establish today’s condition.
Book admission and keep the return simple
SINAC directs visitors to its online reservation system for tickets. Select Carara and the intended date, and follow the identification and entry conditions shown there. A separately arranged guide does not replace park admission.
Wear walking shoes and bring water in a reusable container: SINAC prohibits bringing single-use plastic into the park. Food is prohibited on the trails, and the park says it has no food sales, so place a meal before or after the visit. Keep wildlife observation patient: a birdwatching reputation does not promise a particular sighting. Our Costa Rica wildlife guide explains how to choose an outing without relying on that promise.
Finish at the same main visitor area where you arrived. A short forest circuit with an agreed ride back is a complete Carara day; adding an unconfirmed lagoon trail would change both the walking and the return plan.
