Taggart Lake: Plan for the Longer Construction Route
Decide whether Taggart Lake’s current, steeper return fits your day instead of relying on its normal three-mile profile.

Taggart Lake’s normal three-mile walk is not the right measure for a 2026 construction visit. The park currently describes access as a longer, steeper out-and-back of about 6.8 km (4.25 mi), with 235 m (770 ft) of gain. Choose it if that full return suits your group; do not arrive expecting the older easy, two-hour outing.
The lake is the destination; the detour changes the day
Taggart sits beneath the Tetons at the mouth of Avalanche Canyon. The usual approach crosses sagebrush and forest, with a glacial moraine adding height between the trailhead and lake. The normal trailhead profile remains useful for understanding the setting, but its shorter distance does not describe the construction route.
The 2026 alternatives page supplies the longer return distance and gain. It does not supply a corresponding duration; allow for the added climbing rather than copying the normal route’s two-hour estimate. Our difficulty comparison helps weigh this change against a walk you already know.
Use the signed open route from the trailhead
Reach Taggart Lake trailhead on Teton Park Road, about 5.6 km (3.5 mi) northwest of Moose Junction. Check parking and the detour signs before leaving the vehicle. Follow the open signed approach to the lake and retrace it to the same trailhead. Do not complete a normal northern loop through the work area: the October 15 construction update closes the northern segment until winter recreation begins.
Bring water and bear spray, travel together and follow current wildlife advice. Construction may also delay the road approach. Ask park staff at 307-739-3399 for the day’s signed route if the trailhead instructions are unclear.
For a 2027 trip, start again with the construction page: from May 1 the trailhead and trails are scheduled to close to all use, and lake access shifts to the Valley Trail from the north. The 2026 detour is not a standing promise of future access.
