Checking the route

Hidden Valley’s rock walls give this walk a clear center: a small desert valley enclosed by large formations, with plants and interpretive signs along the circuit. Follow the official trail if you want a short walk through that setting. A climbing or scrambling day among the rocks requires a separate plan.

Enter through the rocks, then circle the valley

Start at Hidden Valley picnic area and follow the named trail through the entrance into the valley. Complete the loop, then leave by the same entrance to return to the parking area. The NPS hiking table gives 1.6 km (1 mi), 30 m (100 ft) of gain and about one hour for the full circuit.

The rock enclosure is the reason to linger, but it also means the entrance is not a flat paved approach. The trailhead page identifies stairs and rock steps at the beginning and end. Keep that return in mind if steps are difficult for someone in the group. Educational signs make the marked loop useful without leaving it for a higher rock perch.

Keep the short walk out of the hottest hours

There is little shade and no cell service at the trail. Carry water from outside the trail area, tell someone the intended route and return time, and choose footwear for rocky steps. For summer nature-trail visits, NPS recommends starting before 9 am; an easy label does not cancel heat and surface demands.

Use permitted parking at the picnic area and return to your vehicle after the loop. Busy weekends can fill the lot; arrive early or change the visit time instead of parking on vegetation.

Read park alerts before driving and check the roads serving Hidden Valley. A closure elsewhere in Joshua Tree does not establish this trail's access. Pets are not permitted on Hidden Valley Trail.
