Brandywine Falls drops over a sandstone cap into a shale-lined gorge. For a short waterfall visit, use the boardwalk from the Brandywine Road parking area. Choose its step-free option if stairs do not suit the group; take the stair section only if everyone can climb back out.

Pick the view before descending

The park’s description distinguishes a boardwalk without stairs from the stepped route into the gorge for a head-on view. Both keep the waterfall central. Follow the signed boardwalk from the lot, use the open viewpoint that suits you and retrace the approach to the same parking area.

The layers help explain what you see: harder Berea Sandstone caps the falls while softer shale below erodes more readily. Moss and hemlocks grow in the damp gorge. Water volume changes the falls’ shape, so a low-flow visit looks different from one after rain.

This is a boardwalk visit, not the separate 2.4 km (1.5 mi) Brandywine Gorge Loop. Do not follow the longer circuit simply because a sign points beyond the falls. Use surface, stairs and return effort to decide whether a route fits, rather than its proximity to parking.

Use the proper lot and stay within visiting hours

The falls are at 8176 Brandywine Road, Sagamore Hills Township, and open dawn to dusk. Parking also serves the Bike and Hike Trail, so demand can exceed capacity. There is no overflow parking; do not leave the car on the road or outside marked spaces. If full, return at another time rather than improvising a roadside start.

Read current conditions before traveling. Ice can close the boardwalk, and the park warns visitors to stay at least 15 m (50 ft) from the top and bottom of the waterfall. Do not climb the falls, fences or rocks. The boardwalk gives the view without entering those areas.
