Bear Lake: A Small Circuit with Two Access Decisions
Choose the Bear Lake circuit, the correct timed-entry category and a workable parking or seasonal shuttle return.

Bear Lake offers a complete lakeside circuit of about 1 km (0.6 mi), with Hallett Peak and the surrounding mountains above the shore. Keep this visit focused on the lake if you want a short walk: Dream and Emerald lakes are separate, longer destinations from the same trailhead.
Reach the lake before choosing more trail
Drive Bear Lake Road to its end, then take the marked approach from the parking area to the shore. Follow the signed Bear Lake Loop and return to the same approach. The corridor guide warns that snow commonly covers the trail from late October into early June. Inspect conditions before committing to the far side; a short lake walk can still be icy.
Choose Timed Entry+ for an ordinary car visit
In 2026, the Bear Lake Road reservation applies from 5 am to 6 pm, May 22–October 18. The ordinary Timed Entry category excludes this corridor and finishes its season earlier, October 12. Park admission is separate.
Enter the corridor within your two-hour reserved window. Carry the complete confirmation and photo ID, with the named holder in the vehicle. If you leave and return, re-entry is allowed only after 2 pm. Without a reservation, ordinary vehicle entry is before 5 am or after 6 pm during the operating season; darkness and conditions may make those poor choices for a walk.
Some camping, wilderness, riding and permitted-service reservations provide access under their own conditions. Check the linked FAQ before buying a duplicate: campground access differs, and Timber Creek does not include Bear Lake Road.
Parking is another decision
An entry reservation does not reserve a space at Bear Lake. If needed, park at Park & Ride and use the free Bear Lake shuttle. Its 2026 season ends October 18, with the last departure from Bear Lake at 7:30 pm. Return to the same Park & Ride before driving out. After that date, do not assume the bus operates.
The separately ticketed Hiker Shuttle from Estes Park has an earlier return connection; it is not included in this car-and-Park-&-Ride plan. Choose the whole access chain before judging the outing by its short walking distance.
