Bitoujiao: Choose the Hillside Views, Leave the Lighthouse Branch Out
Visit Taiwan’s northeast cape on its public hillside paths, with the restricted shore and rockfall-affected lighthouse route excluded.

Bitoujiao’s hillside paths look across the bays and folded coastline of Taiwan’s northeast cape. Choose the public hillside walk for those views, with a return to the same trail entrance. Leave the lighthouse branch out: the visitor authority’s current attraction page still warns of cracked rock and falling debris there.
Separate the three kinds of access
The official visitor description presents a coastal trail area of about 3.5 km and suggests two to three hours for exploring it. Those figures do not establish the length of every currently available circuit. For a shorter, bounded visit, follow the signed public hillside route from its entrance and retrace it when ready, allowing the same walking time for the return.
Two branches need different treatment. The shore route is limited to approved academic or official visits; it is not an ordinary visitor alternative. The lighthouse path and lighthouse are separately listed as closed because of rockfall danger. Neither belongs in this outing.
A historical notice dated 15 June 2016 repealed lighthouse-area control provisions. Its download page was updated in September 2026, but that does not make the repeal a new access announcement. The legal change does not confirm that a damaged physical path has reopened. Follow the newer visitor warning and actual barriers, and ask the information office about any apparent contradiction before entering a branch.
Reach the cape and keep a return connection
The visitor authority lists Taiwan Tourist Shuttle 856 and Keelung buses 791 and 886 to Bitoujiao; local F805 serves Bitou Fishing Port. Choose the stop that matches your walking entrance, then check the return direction and departure before leaving the road. A route number is not a promise of a frequent evening service.
Admission is normally free. Stairs and exposed hillside sections make this a different proposition from staying beside the harbour. Bring water and allow for sun, wind and a slower descent; abandon the climb if the weather makes the steps uncomfortable. The local visitor information number is +886 2 2499 1210. Return to your original entrance and bus stop with daylight remaining, rather than trying to complete a lighthouse circuit that the current visitor page excludes.
