Alishan’s Giant Trees: Choose a Forest Walk Without a Train Connection
Walk among Alishan’s old cypresses, with the tree trail, park approach and return bus treated as separate parts of the visit.

Alishan’s Giant Trees Trail brings you close to huge red cypresses on boardwalks above the forest floor. Choose it as a walking visit within the recreation area, rather than adding a train departure that dictates every stop. The forest path is only one part of the outing: reaching it from the main entrance and getting back to your bus both take additional time.
Pick a section before following the signs
The scenic-area guide describes two sections separated by Shenyi Bridge. The first runs from the Thousand-Year Cypress towards the Sacred Tree site; the second has another group of giant trees. These are connected park paths, not two independently accessible roadside stops.
For a bounded visit, ask at the visitor centre for the current walking approach to the Thousand-Year Cypress, follow the signed first section towards the Sacred Tree site, then retrace the permitted path and approach. That gives you a clear return without relying on a forest railway. Do not treat the short section length as the total distance from the entrance.
The forestry agency allows about an hour and a half for the wider Giant Tree Trail. Add the entrance approach, tree stops and return separately. Its raised boards protect roots; wet surfaces call for a slower pace, especially on steps. Remain on the walkway rather than stepping into the root zone for a photograph.
Keep the bus return visible
The park’s visitor information lists Chiayi County buses 7322 from Chiayi railway station and 7329 from the high-speed rail station to Alishan’s entrance transfer station. Confirm the departure you need before entering the forest. Admission is separate from transport, and public-transport discounts require the relevant ticket evidence.
Park minibuses and the forest railway have their own routes and operating arrangements. If using either, confirm that service’s last return rather than assuming it runs until your road bus leaves. The walking option still needs enough time to reach the entrance. Current weather restrictions can override the published open status; ask staff about the tree section and its approach before committing to the return plan.
