Checking the route

The Noiraigue circuit makes Creux du Van a substantial hike: 14 kilometers with 821 meters of ascent and the same descent. Choose it for a day of climbing through the Jura to the great horseshoe of cliffs. If you only want the rim view, the seasonal upper road approach is a separate visit; it does not make the Noiraigue hike short.

Climb by the fourteen bends

The regional hiking description goes up the Sentier des Quatorze Contours and returns by Le Single to Noiraigue. It gives 4 hours 32 minutes and demanding fitness requirements. Allow additional time for the rim, food and pauses; a late-afternoon train arrival is a poor start for this circuit.

The shape of the place becomes clear at the top: the rock face curves around an enormous open bowl. The rim view is the reward, but the cliff is also the reason to keep well back from the edge, especially in wind, fog or slippery conditions. Choose a day when you can assess both the climb and the exposed upper ground. Distance alone does not describe the difficulty.

Arrive at Noiraigue station and use the signed hiking route from the village. Return by the circuit to Noiraigue, then take the train back to your base. Check the available train departures against a full day outdoors rather than the ascent alone. The regional information point is at Place de la Gare in Noiraigue if you need a current local route check.

The upper approach has its own season

The access page lists Soliat parking around five minutes from the rim in May–October. That is an upper viewpoint approach by car, followed by a walk back to the same parking place. It requires a different arrival plan from the railway circuit. In November–April, several upper roads are not cleared and are not open to traffic; winter paths can be snowy and very slippery. Do not follow a summer driving route into that period without checking it.

Park only in official parking areas. The access information forbids parking in pastures and wild camping. At Creux du Van, dogs must be leashed and drones are prohibited under the canton’s wildlife protection information. Separately, regional tourism strongly advises against bringing a dog around Soliat pastures because of suckler cows. A leash requirement is not reassurance that the pasture encounter is suitable.

For the full hike, carry what you need from Noiraigue. For the upper visit, return to your car before changing conditions make the road or rim harder than expected.
