Checking the route

Caminito del Rey is a one-way walk through a landscape of narrow gorges, cliff-mounted walkways and the more open Hoyo valley. Its north entrance near Ardales and south exit toward El Chorro are different places. Book it only after you can explain how you will reach the first and leave the second.

The official route page describes a north-to-south outing of about 8 km and three to four hours including the approaches. The dramatic walkway is only part of that journey.

Reach the control gate early

Reserve through the official ticket channel. From the El Kiosko area, the shorter approach is published as 1.5 km and 20–25 minutes; the longer approach is 2.7 km and about 50 minutes. The current rules require arrival at the entrance 30 minutes before the ticket time. Add the approach to that advance arrival, rather than arriving at the road at the printed ticket time.

For example, using the shorter approach means allowing at least 55 minutes between leaving its start and your booking time: 25 minutes walking plus 30 minutes early. That is planning arithmetic, before any parking, bus wait or personal buffer.

Children under 8 cannot enter. Minors must be accompanied and carry the identification required by the operator. Wear hiking-suitable shoes secured around the foot, and keep the supplied safety equipment on as instructed. This walk is a poor choice if narrow high walkways make you uncomfortable.

Finish the walk before the bus journey

After the south exit, continue down toward El Chorro and the helmet-return area. The parking and shuttle page places the shuttle stop 300 meters beyond helmet return. It publishes a separate shuttle ticket, not included in walkway admission, and says onboard payment is cash only.

You can use that shuttle to reconnect with your starting area, but confirm the day’s operation before departure. If you park at the visitor reception center, include both the outward shuttle to the El Kiosko area and the return from El Chorro. If arriving by train at El Chorro, solve the northbound connection before the walk and leave room after the south exit for your train.

Check the operator’s weather and closure messages again on the morning. A ticket secures a booking, not suitable conditions. The point-to-point logistics guide is useful here because the road transfer and walking approaches are part of the same day.
