Škocjan Caves: Choose the Tour and Leave Time to Return

Škocjan is a walking tour into an underground river canyon. Choose it for the change from the dry Silent Cave to the Reka River and the bridge above its bed. Your ticket time is the start of a guided visit, not the moment to reach the car park, and the route after the underground section changes with the season.

Confirm the exit before booking

The park's regular tour description places October among the months using Exit 1 in the Big Collapse Doline. It describes that shorter option as 3 km with 500–800 steps. Those are the normal route figures, and they do not settle which exit is operating now.

A separate maintenance notice effective November 4, 2024 says only Exit 2 over the natural bridge is available, with Exit 1 and the elevator closed. It gives 3.5 km and about 900 steps. The notice remains online without an end date; that does not establish whether the restriction still applies, but the regular October description does not resolve it.

Before paying, call the park's Information Centre on +386 5 7082 110. Ask which exit your tour will use, whether the elevator operates, and how many steps and how much walking the complete return involves. If steps determine whether someone can join, settle that answer before choosing the visit. Do not book on the assumption that the lower normal-route estimate applies.

Start at the reception center

Use Matavun 12, near Divača, as your arrival destination, rather than the park administration's address. Arrive at the information desk at least 30 minutes before the booked tour with your printed or digital tickets. The park's visitor notice gives approximately 90–120 minutes for the guided portion. Allow time after that to reach the reception center again before a pickup or onward drive.

For example, a 13:00 ticket means reaching the desk by 12:30. A 15:00 pickup leaves no return allowance if the guided portion takes two hours. Choose a later pickup, or an earlier tour, rather than treating the ticket time as a two-hour door-to-door appointment. This is planning arithmetic, not a park-issued pickup time.

The longer summer visit is a different commitment

When offered, the full route continues independently through the collapse dolines and further caves, then ascends to Matavun and follows signs back to reception. The park lists 5 km, approximately 1,000 steps and 2.5–3 hours for that complete version. Confirm which exit is operating when you book; do not attach the shorter version's effort to the full route.

Bring a warm layer and non-slip shoes: the cave is around 12°C. Photography inside is prohibited, and pets are not allowed. The separate outdoor Education Trail begins and ends at the visitor center; it is a different outing, not a way to enter the underground tour without a ticket.
