Checking the route

Pulau Ubin’s Sensory Trail links village planting traditions with mangroves and a freshwater pond. Choose it for a walk near the island’s village rather than a journey to its far side. The return boat remains part of the outing: there is no fixed ferry timetable to catch after finishing the trail.

Walk to the pond and return to the village

NParks describes a 1.5 km trail ending at Sensory Trail Pond. Follow its markers from the village area through the garden and mangroves, then retrace the permitted route to the village and jetty. The published trail length does not include every jetty approach or establish a 1.5 km round trip.

The pond was formed by combining former fish-farming ponds into habitat for birds, dragonflies and other wildlife. Stop to look across the water, but leave space for animals to move away. The garden’s useful plants explain the trail’s sensory theme; it is not an invitation to pick or taste leaves.

Take drinking water before leaving the village. This short route does not need a bicycle rental, a van transfer or a Chek Jawa extension. Keeping those out makes the walk easier to fit around the boat and weather.

Agree the crossing before leaving Changi

Bumboats leave Changi Point Ferry Terminal beside Changi Village. Current NParks information says they normally run on demand between 06:00 and 19:00, departing with twelve passengers. The crossing takes around ten minutes and typically costs S$4 per person each way. Confirm the fare before each departure; fewer passengers or travel outside normal hours can mean a higher privately agreed fare.

Ask about the return arrangement on arrival, then come back to Ubin jetty well before the end of the normal operating period. Waiting for passengers adds uncertainty. Outside-hours travel needs prior agreement, not an assumption that a boat will appear. If no return bumboat is available, NParks gives 1800 471 7300 for assistance.

The island notices include Chek Jawa maintenance restrictions elsewhere and advise avoiding forested areas during and immediately after bad weather. Do not enter flooded sections. If weather interrupts this outing, return through the village to the jetty instead of extending the walk across the island.
