A coastal walking day

St Abb's Head combines an exposed cliff walk with an inland return beside or above Mire Loch. Start at the National Trust for Scotland nature-center car park and use its 6 km (3.7 mi) circuit for a substantial coastal outing. Keep the steeper Kirk Hill addition optional.

The coastal half looks into bays and along the cliffs toward the lighthouse. Mire Loch changes the scene on the return: water and gorse sit inland from the open headland. That contrast is a reason to take the circuit rather than walking only to the first sea view.

The climbing belongs in the plan

The Trust's walking guide gives 2–3 hours and grades the circuit moderate. Its published ascent is about 226 m (740 ft), increasing to about 250 m (820 ft) with Kirk Hill. The repeated descents and climbs matter more than the short-looking distance on a map.

From the car park, the guide follows the footpath past the nature center toward the village before turning toward the cliffs. The coastal path descends steep steps toward Horsecastle Bay, goes around the base of Kirk Hill and climbs toward the lighthouse. Take the official map and description with you so the start through the paths by the village is as clear as the headland itself.

Keep Kirk Hill optional

The main route goes around Kirk Hill. The Trust describes the steeper option over it as adding roughly 400 m (a quarter mile). Choose that addition because you want the climb and conditions suit it.

For the inland return, the published route offers the tarmac lighthouse road or the path beside Mire Loch. The lochside choice includes a steep track back uphill to the road. It changes the view and surface; it does not remove all the effort from the second half of the day.

A coast worth leaving time for

In summer, seabird colonies give the cliff section another focus. Wildlife activity changes with season; follow any local distancing signs, including those near seals, rather than approaching for a better photograph. Dogs are welcome on leads under the Trust's guidance.

Keep back from cliff edges and reassess the outing in strong wind. An inland loop deserves its own assessment if the coastal route is restricted; select the open signed route rather than improvising a connection around a closed section.

The village is about a ten-minute walk from the nature center, according to the Trust. Add your actual arrival connection to the car-park circuit and return to that same start. The coastal-walk guide helps you keep this land-based route distinct from any temptation to descend to a beach.
