Loch Morlich: A Beach Stop or a Walk Around the Water

Choose between the beach and the 5.8-kilometer loch circuit, with current Glenmore forestry notices kept separate.

A coastal walking day

Walk the Loch Morlich circuit when you want a couple of hours among trees and water, with the Cairngorms beyond. Stop at the beach when you want a shorter visit. The circuit is moderate rather than completely flat, and the wider Glenmore forest currently has work-related restrictions. The terrain checklist is useful if short steep sections or uneven ground would change your choice.

Around the loch, not up the mountain

Forestry and Land Scotland lists the Loch Morlich Trail at 5.8 kilometers, allowing two hours. Most of its gravel surface is wide and fairly level, but there are uneven or muddy sections, short slopes, a steep ramp and two road crossings. The route description is a better guide to suitability than calling the whole outing easy.

The circuit repeatedly changes the relationship between woodland, shore and mountain view. You spend some of the walk among trees rather than continuously beside an open beach. For a smaller visit, keep to the beach area and return to the same car park; do not begin circling the loch if the group only wants a brief stop.

The Glenmore route card also gives the separate Beach Trail as 2.4 kilometers and about an hour, starting at Loch Morlich Beach car park. It follows woods by Allt Mor and the sands. Choose one named route on the map at the start rather than blending its distance with the loch circuit.

The route card and the closures answer different questions

FLS’s current local alert warns of harvesting around Badaguish. Its linked closure map, dated September 22, 2026, marks restricted tracks north of the loch in red. Stay out of those areas and follow staff directions; do not add an unplanned northern forest shortcut to the loch walk.

Earlier summer wildfire notices are not the last word on every Glenmore route. An October 5 update reopened the Ryvoan Trail and Green Lochan access while retaining restrictions on other sections. That does not turn a Loch Morlich outing into a Green Lochan circuit. Check the specific route you intend to walk, and use the loch as the day’s bounded objective here.

Arrive from Aviemore and return to the same start

Drive from Aviemore on the Cairngorm Mountain road and use an official signed loch or beach car park. For the beach-start routes, select Loch Morlich Beach rather than assuming every roadside parking place is the same trailhead. Finish your chosen circuit back at that start, then drive back toward Aviemore.

The visitor page says buses between Aviemore and Cairngorm Mountain pass the loch. Check both the stop location for your chosen trailhead and the return departure before boarding. A two-hour trail estimate needs additional time for the stop walk, beach pauses and waiting for the bus.

Parking charges are enforced by the Highland Council partnership; FLS parking passes are not valid here. Fires and barbecues are prohibited. Beach toilets have a normal April–October season, with year-round toilets in Glenmore village. Keep those practical differences in mind if the visit falls into November.
