Checking the route

Knockan Crag makes a good stop when you want the Highland landscape to explain itself. Here, older rocks sit above younger ones: evidence of the sideways movement that helped geologists understand the Moine Thrust. Start at the Rock Room and choose how much climbing to add, rather than heading straight for the highest path.

Begin with the rocks you came to see

The open-sided Rock Room introduces the surrounding landscape. From the car park, a short approach includes a low-gradient ramp that avoids steps. Choose this if you want the interpretation without committing to the crag.

The reserve's visiting page describes two shorter choices beyond it. The Quarry Trail turns back before the harder going; the Thrust Trail reaches the geological feature itself. Return to the Rock Room and then the car park after the option you choose.

Three trails do different jobs

The official reserve leaflet gives these approximate times from the Rock Room:

ChoicePublished estimateWhat changes
Quarry Trail20 minutesEasier option, avoiding the climb to the thrust
Thrust Trail30 minutesReaches the Moine Thrust
Crag Top TrailAbout one hourCircular route with steep climbs and wider views

Those estimates do not include your approach to the Rock Room or time reading the interpretation. Do not add the three together as a recommended continuous circuit. Choose one using the site map and signs.

The Crag Top route adds views across Coigach and Assynt, but the climb changes the outing. A short time estimate does not make steep ground an easy roadside stroll. In poor conditions, the Rock Room and a shorter trail may give you the geological story without the higher circuit.

Arrive at the reserve, return to the same car park

The reserve entrance is on the A835, 21 km north of Ullapool. Use Knockan Crag itself as your destination: the nearest postcode is centered farther north at Elphin. This guide assumes a car or an arranged drop-off and pickup at the reserve; it does not depend on an unconfirmed roadside bus return.

NatureScot describes the site as open throughout the year. Its management plan also explains that severe weather can cause rockfalls and water erosion, with closures during stabilization work. Follow on-site closures and check the reserve page before making a special journey. General year-round opening does not override a work notice.

If your group is choosing between the Quarry and Crag Top trails, compare the climbing and footing as well as time; hike difficulty explains why those are separate decisions.
