Glenfinnan Viaduct: Choose the River Path or Hillside Circuit
Choose a close view of Glenfinnan Viaduct or the longer hillside circuit, with steps, station connections and the return in mind.

At Glenfinnan, the walking choice is between reaching the arches beside the river and climbing onto the hillside for a wider view. Choose the river path and return the same way if you want the simplest outing. Choose the circuit only if steps and a potentially slippery hillside suit your group.
The railway bridge is the attraction even without a steam train. Plan the walk first; a particular train passing is a separate, time-sensitive extra.
Beside the River Finnan
Start at the visitor car parks off the A830, beside the Glenfinnan Monument visitor center. The National Trust for Scotland's access guide places the start of the traffic-free viaduct path in the adjacent community car park. It is a bound-gravel path, crossing the river by a footbridge, with the viaduct 1.2 km from the visitor center.
Walk to the arches and retrace the path to your car or pickup point. Doubling the published one-way distance gives approximately 2.4 km, before diversions around the car parks. This is a distance calculation, not a separately measured trail. It keeps the outing on the lower path rather than adding the steep, rocky climb behind the bridge.
The hillside and station make a longer walk
The Trust's viaduct page describes a 4 km circular walk taking 60–90 minutes, using the hillside and connecting paths. Follow the signed walking route toward Glenfinnan station and return by the pavement connection to the visitor center. Add time for stops; do not read the published walking estimate as a complete train-watching visit.
From the station, the hillside route to the visitor center via the viaduct is 2.4 km and has steps. The pavement connection is 1.5 km. These are different routes between the same places, so a station arrival does not have to commit you to the hillside. The easier river outing may be a better fit after a wet arrival.
Keep the train journey separate from the train view
For public transport, use ScotRail for a dated journey to and from Glenfinnan, or Shiel Buses for the Fort William–Mallaig corridor. Both are linked in the Trust's access guide. Choose your return before setting out and allow the walk back to the station or bus stop; the bus stop is 200 m from the visitor center along pavement. A service used to reach Glenfinnan is not a promise that a steam train will cross while you are at the viewpoint.
The current visitor page warns that parking is limited: use marked bays. If a steam-train view is essential, check its operator's dated service information separately and keep expectations flexible. For the walking day itself, setting a turnaround time helps protect the return connection without rushing the hillside descent.
