Dollar Glen: Waterfalls Below Castle Campbell
Walk Dollar Glen’s linked woodland loops while keeping the castle’s seasonal admission and the glen’s access distinct.

Dollar Glen is a steep woodland walk with a castle above it, rather than a flat approach to a castle door. Go for the burns, bridges and views through the trees. Decide separately whether Castle Campbell’s interior fits the season and your timing.
Two loops in a steep glen
The National Trust for Scotland describes a figure-of-eight network with a spur from each of the two car parks. Both loops pass Castle Campbell. The southern loop is about 1.3 miles, with raised wooden walkways, waterfalls and a viewing platform near the meeting of the Burns of Care and Sorrow. The northern loop is about 0.4 miles and follows the Burn of Sorrow before climbing toward open views above the trees.
Those are loop measurements; include the approach from your chosen car park or Dollar village as well. The glen paths climb steeply in places, cross several bridges and can be uneven and slippery. NTS calls them strenuous and unsuitable for wheelchairs or children’s buggies. Short distance does not remove those obstacles.
For the broader woodland outing, follow the signed southern loop and return to your original spur. Add the northern loop only if the group wants more climbing. If someone needs an easy flat stroll, choose another outing rather than using the small northern distance as reassurance. Hike difficulty depends on surface and ascent as well as length.
The repaired bridge is not an old closure
A bridge damaged by Storm Arwen in 2021 was reopened in April 2025. The NTS announcement says this restored the connection between the glen’s east and west sides. Older descriptions of that bridge being closed should not be used as the current route plan. New works or storm barriers still take precedence on the day; turn back if a signed loop is interrupted rather than improvising across the burn.
Castle season and the way home
The glen planning page lists the glen as open all year and free to enter. Reach it on foot from Dollar via Mill Green, or from the Quarry car park. Use the same village approach or parking spur on your return so the day ends where you left your transport. There are no toilet facilities in the glen.
Castle Campbell is operated by Historic Environment Scotland. Its current visit page closes the castle October 1–March 31. April–September opening is 10:00–16:30 with a 12:30–13:30 lunch closure and last entry half an hour before closing. A walk past the castle in October is therefore not an interior visit.
For a castle-focused visit by car, Brewlands is the closest car park, about 500 meters away along an approach with steep ground and a stepped bridge. Larger vehicles must use Quarry; there is no public drop-off at the castle. Keeping the glen walk and the castle ticket separate makes either version easier to fit into the day.
