Ria Formosa by Ferry: An Armona Island Day
Plan an Armona island day from Olhão: a ferry across Ria Formosa, a choice of lagoon or ocean shore, and enough time to walk back to the pier.

Armona offers two different shores in one island day: the Ria Formosa side near the lagoon and the beach facing the open sea. Start from Olhão, take the ferry, and choose how much of the visit you want to spend walking across the island. A long beach pause and an easy return work better when you choose the return sailing first.
Turismo de Portugal describes Armona as part of the sandy barrier between the lagoon and the sea, reached by ferry from Olhão. It also identifies a small fishing community and restaurants. That combination gives the day a gentle rhythm: boat, island settlement, chosen shore, then the walk back.
Lagoon shore or ocean beach?
The municipal beach page names Armona-Ria and Armona-Mar separately. Use those names when looking at a map or asking for directions. The island landing and the open-sea beach are different points in your day.
| If you want… | Build the visit around… | Allow time for… |
|---|---|---|
| A shorter island outing | The settlement and a permitted stop on the lagoon side | A stroll, a break and the return to the pier |
| An ocean-beach day | The signed pedestrian approach to Armona-Mar | The crossing of the island in both directions, plus beach time |
| A restaurant stop as well | A confirmed opening and a shore visit that still fits | Ordering, eating and walking back without rushing |
For the ocean beach, find the current authorized access from the landing before setting off. Let the walking time determine how much beach time fits, rather than choosing a sailing around an optimistic guess. If anyone in the group needs a step-free route, confirm the full pier-to-destination approach with the local provider.
The boat crossing is part of the landscape visit, so leave room to enjoy it. Choosing a single island also means you can spend your shore time looking around instead of coordinating another departure.
Keep the ferry and the walk on the same plan
The sequence is Olhão pier → Armona landing → chosen shore → Armona return pier → Olhão. Save the two pier locations as well as the beach name. They are the places you need to recognize when coming back.
Olhão's municipal beach page links the Armona boat timetable. Check its date range, direction and ticket conditions for your visit, then confirm the posted service at the departure pier. Build in time for boarding and the complete return walk from your chosen shore. If you arrive later than planned, shorten the beach pause.
A different Ria Formosa island needs its own departure point and return service. Choose that pairing before booking accommodation around it; ferries from different towns are not interchangeable. The Portugal car-free guide helps you connect the mainland leg with the ferry.
A beach day with room to change
Bring the water, sun protection and food you need for the chosen outing. Follow signed access and keep off closed dune areas. At the beach, use the day's posted notices to decide whether entering the water is appropriate; a lagoon or ocean label alone cannot answer that.
If the ferry is canceled or conditions do not suit the visit, use a separately checked mainland plan. For another Algarve day, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail offers a cliff-top landscape, but its walking and transport arrangements need their own preparation.
