Checking the route

Fajã de Lopo Vaz is a descent to the foot of Flores’s southern cliffs, followed by a climb back along the same path. Choose it when you want the coastal setting and can keep enough energy for the ascent. A short distance on a map does not make the return a flat beach stroll.

A coastal shelf below the cliff

The Azores Trails description starts the walk at the Fajã de Lopo Vaz picnic area. Stone steps form part of the access. Below, the fajã is a coastal platform formed by material falling from the surrounding cliffs; its south-facing setting supports fruit cultivation.

The detailed description explicitly calls this a dead-end trail, with exploration at the bottom left to each walker before returning the same way. Its summary labels the route “Circular,” but that label is not a reason to look for a second way up. Use the described out-and-back access.

The profile gives 3.4 km, medium difficulty and two hours. Treat those as the published outing figures, not permission to add unlimited exploring below. The operator warns of possible falling stones along the coastal cliff.

Keep the climb in the plan

Arrive at the named picnic-area start with your return transport settled. If someone is dropping you off, agree on collection there, not at the coast. Keep the route map offline, carry your own water and choose a turnaround time that leaves room for the climb. Turn back early if the descent already feels beyond the group’s comfort. The ascent remains ahead even after you have seen the shoreline.

This outing is about reaching the fajã on foot. Swimming adds a separate coastal decision and is not part of the walk described here.

The official trail alerts did not list PRC04FLO as closed when checked on October 17, 2026; the Flores closure shown was Ponta Delgada–Fajã Grande. Reopen that list before setting out and follow any barrier at the start. An absent alert cannot rule out a fresh rockfall or poor local conditions.
