Balcões from Ribeiro Frio: Forest Path, Mountain View

Balcões suits a Madeira day when you want a forest walk with a definite destination, rather than a summit crossing. The path follows a levada from Ribeiro Frio to a balcony above wooded valleys; the island’s central peaks are a clear-weather bonus.

The important number is the return distance. Visit Madeira gives 1.5 km each way, 3 km altogether, and about 1 hour 30 minutes. That is the walk from ER 103 to the viewpoint and back, not the journey from your accommodation.

Follow PR 11, then retrace it

Arrange your arrival at Ribeiro Frio on ER 103 and identify the PR 11 start before leaving your vehicle or driver. Follow the Levada da Serra do Faial to Balcões, then return along the same path. There is no separate exit to solve and no reason to add a mountain traverse to complete the outing.

The levada and forest are part of the visit even when cloud hides the peaks. A trip made solely for a guaranteed mountain panorama is a less dependable choice. If the weather closes in, returning early still leads to the same road meeting point.

Reserve the walk before arranging the day

The IFCN booking FAQ describes online timeslots through SIMplifica, including registration for fee-exempt visitors. A paid combined-trail rate does not remove the need to reserve each trail. Select PR 11 and your date before fixing a driver’s pickup time.

The tourism page showed PR 11 open when checked on October 18, 2026. Reopen IFCN’s trail information before departure; an earlier booking is not a promise about weather or later restrictions.
