Time for a photograph

At Vøringsfossen, start at Fossli for the developed viewpoints above Måbødalen. Make those views the main stop, and add the step bridge only if stairs, conditions and time suit your group. You do not need to descend into the valley to see the waterfall plunge from the Hardangervidda plateau.

The setting is the abrupt transition between the high plateau and a narrow valley. The bridge and platforms reveal different angles of that drop; they are not the start of a casually interchangeable walk to the foot of the falls.

Keep the car at Fossli

From Route 7, follow the signed Fossli approach to the parking area. The regional tourism listing places the viewpoints near Fossli Hotel about 1 km from the main road. Walk to those platforms, then decide whether to follow the managed path toward the step bridge. Return by the permitted path to Fossli and your vehicle.

The road administration's site description connects upper Fossli to lower Fossatromma via the step bridge over Bjoreio and the old pack road. The complete facility contains more than 1 km of paths; that figure is not a measured return from your particular parking space. Walking farther toward Fossatromma also means walking back unless you have arranged a different pickup.

If steps do not fit the day, stay with the accessible open viewpoints around your chosen starting area, following local signs. The step bridge includes stairs; use the open viewpoints near Fossli if those do not suit your group.

The calendar is conditional on snow

The Destination Hardanger Fjord listing gives April 1–October 31 for parking and toilets at Fossli and Fossatromma, subject to snow, ice and weather: opening can be later and closing earlier. Viewpoints, the stepped bridge and parts of the path network close in winter. Deep snow can bury safety fences.

Check Norwegian Scenic Routes and road conditions before driving across the plateau. Route 7 may have convoy operation or temporary closures in winter even though it is normally a year-round road. Being able to drive past does not establish that the viewpoints are open.

The separate valley-base hike is not part of this stop. Return to Fossli after the views you have chosen and leave the remaining daylight for the road journey. Our shoulder-season guide helps when weather may shorten a sightseeing drive.
