Fløyen and Skomakerdiket: Ride Up for a Woodland Walk
Use the funicular both ways and add the lake circuit from the upper station, keeping maintenance dates separate from normal hours.

Ride Fløibanen up from central Bergen if you want the city-and-fjord viewpoint followed by a short woodland walk. From the upper station, Skomakerdiket is only 400 m away on the signed gravel approach. You can walk around the lake, sit beside the water, and return to the same station for the ride down.
This choice leaves the long climb from Bergen out of the walking day. It also keeps your return in a known place rather than finishing on an unfamiliar city-mountain path. The view at the station and the lake do different jobs: one opens over Bergen, the other takes you into the woods above it.
From the playground to the lake
Start at Fløibanen's city station at Vetrlidsallmenningen 23A. Buy a ticket covering the journeys you intend to make and ride to the top. Follow signs for Skomakerdiket; the gravel road begins behind the playground. The operator's Norwegian description gives 10–15minutes for the 400 m approach, not for the complete lake outing.
Follow the lakeside path around the water, then use the same signed approach back to the upper station. The operator describes both the approach and lake walk as suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Check conditions and the funicular's boarding guidance for your equipment; that description is not a guarantee about snow or ice on a particular date.
Book around the actual operating day
Normal funicular hours run to midnight, with half-hourly departures early and late rather than the frequent daytime pattern. Choose an earlier planned descent so that a stop or missed car does not consume your whole return margin.
There is an important dated exception: Fløibanen and all its facilities close November 2–5, 2026 for maintenance. The ride-up, walk, ride-down plan does not work during those dates. Do not substitute a walking ascent unless you deliberately plan that larger outing.
The lake café has its own opening pattern, so bring what you need for the walk without making a café purchase essential. Summer canoe activity is seasonal and is not part of this October walking plan. When combining Bergen sightseeing with the woods, leave time for the walk back to the upper station and the ride down.
