Checking the route

For a boat-assisted Besseggen day, take the boat from Gjendesheim to Memurubu first, then walk the ridge back to Gjendesheim. This puts the boat at the beginning and lets the walking finish at the original side of Gjende. It is still a long, exposed mountain day for experienced hikers, not a short walk added to a lake cruise.

The ridge separates views of Gjende and Bessvatnet. Its narrow, steep section requires climbing over rock, and wind changes the experience. Choose the day for the terrain and conditions as well as the view.

This year's boat season has ended

On October 18, 2026, the Gjende boat operator says the season is over. Its booking page lists the 2026 season as June 6–September 19, with daily departures through September 13 and a later listed departure on September 19. Do not use a general tourism page's mid-October season description to plan an October boat-assisted hike.

For a future operating season, confirm the timetable and reserve the Gjendesheim-to-Memurubu sailing before organizing the rest of the day. The operator currently advertises 2027 service from June 5 through September 25, with booking opening December 1, 2026. These are published plans, not a reservation or a promise about trail conditions.

Join the boat from the correct parking area

The parking instructions require long-stay visitors to use Reinsvangen, then the Visit Gjende shuttle to Gjendeosen. There is no long-stay parking at the pier. Arrange parking, shuttle and sailing together, allowing enough time to reach the boat before departure. After the hike reaches Gjendesheim, return to Reinsvangen using the shuttle you have checked for that day.

The walking route is about 14 km. Visit Norway gives six to eight hours including breaks; allow the full day after landing at Memurubu. Follow the marked ridge route toward Gjendesheim and prepare for uneven ground, substantial ascent and exposure. The boat operator's shorter normal estimate is not a reason to squeeze the walk before a fixed evening departure.

Do not hike with a forecast of strong wind, heavy rain, thunderstorms or fog. Consult local advice, bring food, water and mountain clothing, and arrange a response if you need to turn back toward Memurubu rather than assuming an unbooked return boat will be available. The point-to-point logistics guide helps keep that fallback separate from the normal boat-first plan.
