Visit the paved limestone loop, understand when the blowholes may perform and return to the highway without adding a beach scramble.

A coastal walking day

Pancake Rocks is worth stopping for even when the blowholes are quiet. The layered limestone and surge pools give Dolomite Point its shape; the sea decides how much spray accompanies your walk. Choose a visit with time to follow the whole visitor path rather than a roadside dash to one blowhole.

A loop from the highway

The walk is at Dolomite Point beside SH6 near Punakaiki, between Greymouth and Westport. Use the northern car park: DOC's construction notice, reviewed on 6 October 2026, closes the southern car park to 22 October 2026. The nearby Te Korowai o Punangairi Walkway is also closed for those works, while Pancake Rocks and Blowholes remain open. Do not use that closed walkway as an approach.

Follow the paved visitor path around the formations and return by its marked exit. DOC warns that the returning path emerges abruptly at the highway, so bring children back together before that final stretch.

The official description identifies an optional stepped section. The remainder is suitable for wheelchairs with assistance; leave the steps out if they do not fit your group.

Climbing on the rocks is prohibited, both for visitor safety and to protect nesting birds and rare plants. Keep to the formed path and inside barriers.

Tide explains the show

DOC says the blowholes are strongest around high tide with a southwesterly swell. That is a favorable combination, not a performance schedule. If the sea is quiet, the layers and cavities remain visible along the walk. If photography matters, allow room for the stop between drives; planning photo stops helps with that choice.

Parking is charged, and stays exceeding the ten-minute grace period require payment on arrival. Bring a payment card; cash is not accepted. Check the displayed tariff and West Coast notices before traveling, particularly after severe weather. Follow any restriction at the site even while its normal walking description remains online.
