Mārahau to Anchorage: Put the Boat Before the Walk
Choose a water-taxi arrival at Anchorage and a coastal walk back to Mārahau, with the complete distance and transport in view.

For an Abel Tasman walking day, consider a booked water taxi from Mārahau to Anchorage, then walk south back to Mārahau. The boat gives you a coastal arrival; the walk brings you through forest toward your road transport. You also avoid making a late beach pickup the deadline for every pause.
A full walk, despite the boat
DOC lists Mārahau–Anchorage as 12.4 km (7.7 mi), four hours one way. Reversing direction does not make it a short beach stroll. The route description includes gullies and a descent toward Anchorage; walking back means climbing out of the bay before following the coast to the Mārahau causeway.
Add the sailing, check-in, lunch and pauses to that walking allowance. A late drop-off can leave too little daylight even without a return sailing to catch. Choose the boat first, then decide whether the full walk fits.
Finish where your road transport waits
AquaTaxi’s booking page offers Anchorage from Mārahau. Book your date and confirm check-in, beach drop-off and parking. Kaiteriteri is a different departure point: DOC advises against walking its 7 km (4.3 mi) road connection to the track entrance. Use the same road base at both ends unless you arrange the extra transfer.
Walking outward with a booked Anchorage pickup is another choice, but it adds a firm finishing deadline. Allow the route time, stops and the operator’s meeting margin. Our point-to-point guide helps trace the car and keys.
Keep the day south of Anchorage
This route does not include Torrent Bay or Awaroa’s tidal crossings farther north. Keep to the established Coast Track, without tidal beach shortcuts. Day walking has no park-entry charge; overnight huts and campsites require advance booking year-round. An unplanned overnight stay is not a reliable fallback for missing transport.
Read Nelson/Tasman alerts and confirm boat operations before leaving your base. If either leg is unavailable, change the outing before setting off.
