Manginangina: A Boardwalk Among Puketī’s Kauri
Find the Waiare Road start, visit the kauri grove and return to your car, with footwear cleaning built into the plan.

Manginangina suits a visit beneath large kauri without a long forest hike. A boardwalk enters mature kauri and swamp forest, with interpretation panels and a larger viewing space among the trees. Choose this grove as a small destination in its own right, rather than the opening of an improvised Puketī crossing.
Find the right forest stop
DOC’s directions place the car park on Waiare Road and the track across the road. From SH10 north of Waipapa, the approach follows Pungaere Road, then Waiare Road. Roads off the state highways include unsealed sections, so allow separately for the drive.
Park, locate the signed start and cross carefully to the boardwalk. Follow the formed route into the grove, pause at the viewing area and retrace the signed way to your car. The boardwalk allows buggies; adjoining forest trails do not automatically have the same surface.
Clean shoes before the first step
DOC directs visitors to remove soil from footwear and gear, use cleaning stations and remain on the track to protect kauri. Give everyone time to do that properly. No fires are allowed.
The panels explain the wider forest community around the trunks. For a group with different walking ambitions, this bounded grove visit can be the shared outing; decide on any longer forest walk separately, with its own route and return.
Check Northland alerts or ask DOC about Manginangina before driving out. Disease controls and local restrictions can change independently of the general forest description. If the boardwalk is restricted, do not go around the closure through the grove.
