Lake Matheson: Jetty Lookout or the Whole Circuit?
Compare the accessible Jetty Lookout return with the longer forest-and-wetland circuit, starting and finishing at Lake Matheson car park.

Choose Jetty Lookout at Lake Matheson if you want a shorter forest walk with a lakeside seat. Choose the circuit if you want the far shore and wetland as well. Both leave from the same car park, so the decision changes your time on foot rather than requiring a second road transfer.
Two complete outings
DOC’s guide lists Jetty Lookout at 2.4 km (1.5 mi), 45 minutes return. Cross Clearwater Stream by the suspension bridge, follow the gravel path through rainforest, then return by the same way. This first section is the wheelchair-suitable option.
The full circuit is 4.4 km (2.7 mi), 1 hour 30 minutes total. It continues around the lake and returns through the eastern wetland. You can walk either way, although clockwise is common. View of Views and Reflection Island involve stepped side approaches; the accessibility description for the jetty does not apply to those branches.
The water’s dark color comes from organic matter washed from the forest. In still, clear conditions it can reflect Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Wind or cloud may remove the reflection while leaving the forest walk intact. Dawn and dusk favor still water, but leave enough light for the outing you choose.
Arrive ready for the longer choice
From Fox Glacier/Weheka, follow Cook Flat Road for 5 km (3.1 mi), then turn right on the signed road. Parking is free; toilets are at the car park. Bring drinking water because none is supplied. No booking is required for the walk.
If different members of your group choose different distances, agree whether everyone returns from the jetty together or where they will meet afterward. The mixed-pace guide helps keep that decision comfortable.
Check current DOC notices before driving out and obey any site restriction. Keep watercraft off the lake; boating, kayaking and other watercraft are prohibited. Carry out rubbish and leave the lake edge as a walking destination.
