Kaikōura Peninsula: Point Kean and the Clifftop Walk

Choose Point Kean’s lookout or a clifftop return toward Whalers Bay, keeping the shore, seals and journey from town separate.

A coastal walking day

Point Kean offers a short climb to a lookout or a longer clifftop walk toward Whalers Bay viewpoint and back. Both keep the sea below you and return to the same car park. The full town circuit is a larger outing, not a necessary addition to this coastal stop.

Choose your clifftop extent

DOC lists 200 m (660 ft), five minutes one way from Point Kean car park to the waka-shaped lookout. Continue to Whalers Bay viewpoint for another 1.5 km (0.9 mi), 25 minutes one way. Returning by the same path makes the combined outing 3.4 km (2.1 mi) and about an hour of added published segment times, before pauses. That is arithmetic from DOC’s sections, not a separate official loop.

The clifftop has exposed, unfenced edges. Stay on the formed path and keep children close. This plan leaves out the Whalers Bay shore descent: it has separate rockfall and wildlife hazards, and DOC advises returning up its stairs rather than along the shore toward the car park.

Give seals space

Remain at least 20 m (66 ft) from seals and never disturb them. DOC’s January 2026 reminder addresses visitors approaching too closely. High water or seals may prevent a shore-level return even when the clifftop remains usable.

Dogs are excluded from the walkway and tidal platforms apart from specific town/reserve approach exceptions. Those exceptions do not include this Point Kean clifftop outing.

Include the approach from town

The town-to-Point Kean route is 4.4 km (2.7 mi), 50 minutes one way. Walking from town adds 8.8 km (5.5 mi) to either outing. Otherwise arrange your road arrival and departure; DOC lists no scheduled public transport to the walkway.

Read Marlborough notices including road-damage advice. Coastal wind can make a short clifftop visit very different from a sheltered town walk.
