Ritsurin Garden: Ponds, Pines and Time to Walk
Make the South Garden the core of a Takamatsu visit, with a longer North Garden option and a separate boat decision.

Start with Ritsurin’s South Garden if this is your first visit. Its pond, arched bridge and carefully shaped pines give the garden a clear focus. Add the North Garden when you have time to keep walking; the boat is an optional activity, not a shortcut you need to complete the visit.
South first, north if you have longer
The official garden leaflet gives a recommended South Garden course of about 60 minutes and a North Garden course of about 40 minutes. Those are walking-course estimates. Tea, a museum stop and a boat departure need extra time.
In the south, Nanko Pond, Engetsu-kyo Bridge and Kikugetsu-tei Teahouse form the main landscape. Hirai-ho is a landscaped hill overlooking that arrangement, with Mount Shiun behind it. Choose its climb if you want the elevated view; take the lower paths when slopes are unsuitable. The leaflet marks some stretches impassable for wheelchairs, so the fact that rental wheelchairs are offered does not make every garden path accessible.
The north adds a different pond landscape and the old duck-hunting grounds around Kamoba. Follow the numbered points on the garden map rather than treating every pond as part of the same short circuit. Decide your exit gate before the last section; East Gate and North Gate lead toward different approaches.
Pick the arrival that suits your railway
The access page puts JR Ritsurin Koen Kitaguchi station around three minutes from the garden, while Kotoden Ritsurin Koen is around ten minutes away. These are different railways and station names. Use the North Gate with the JR northern approach; for a Kotoden arrival, follow the signed garden approach to East Gate. Return through the gate and station you selected, or plan the cross-garden station change before entering.
October opening hours are 06:00–17:30; November is 06:30–17:00. Garden closing time includes getting back to the gate. If a train connection matters, leave time for the walk outside too.
The boat has its own ticket and rules
The current Japanese boat information lists a roughly 30-minute South Pond ride. Garden admission is additional. Children under three cannot board, and elementary-school children and younger need a guardian. Reserved passengers must buy their boat ticket at least 30 minutes before departure; same-day places can sell out. Leave the ride out if it squeezes the walking visit.
Before following a printed course, ask at entry which paths are open. August and September 2026 notices reported wild boar and continued some path closures after one animal was caught; they do not establish which paths are closed today. Follow the current barriers, especially near the mountain side.
For a Shikoku stay that also includes island art, Naoshima’s ferry day needs a separate transport allowance. Ritsurin is easier to place on a day that leaves time in Takamatsu itself.
