Enter Kasugayama on its north path, turn back at Momiji Falls and keep Mount Wakakusa as a separate outing.

Checking the route

For a manageable introduction to Kasugayama, use the north forest entrance and walk to Momiji Falls, then retrace your steps. You get a stretch beneath the trees without committing to the long route around the mountain or the paid climb on neighboring Mount Wakakusa.

A clear turnaround inside the forest

Nara Prefecture’s hiking map places Momiji Falls (楓の滝) 0.7 kilometers from the north entrance (北入口). Walking the same segment back makes roughly 1.4 kilometers between the entrance and the falls and back; that is our arithmetic from the map, excluding the approach across Nara Park. Treat the falls as a named turnaround, not a promise of heavy water flow.

The old forest has a different character from Wakakusa’s grassy slopes. It has been protected as Kasuga Taisha’s sacred woodland for more than a millennium, and the prefecture identifies it as part of Nara’s cultural World Heritage site. Stay on permitted paths. Entering the protected forest off those routes, collecting plants or animals and using fire are prohibited.

Continue farther only with a complete route and enough daylight. The prefecture’s separate mountain hiking page describes a much longer north-to-south forest outing, including sections shared with vehicles on the Okuyama road. That is a different day from this short return walk. Its summit alternatives also involve Wakakusa’s admission and opening season.

Reach the path, then return through the park

From JR Nara or Kintetsu-Nara station, the prefecture’s access page offers a Nara Kotsu bus to Kasuga Taisha Honden, followed by about ten minutes on foot to forest-path access. Use the north entrance shown on the hiking map. After returning from Momiji Falls, retrace the park approach and take a station-bound bus from the shrine area. Check its destination and last useful departure before heading into the trees; the forest segment’s distance does not include the bus-stop walks.

For an event-day visit, check the park notices too. The official Wakakusa Yamayaki information closes all Kasugayama forest trails from noon on the mountain-burning day. That event rule is not a year-round noon closing time. For current path works or storm damage, ask Nara Park Office on 0742-22-0375 and obey closures at the entrance.

Keep the afternoon’s other Nara sights outside the forest walking estimate. A small, retraceable outing is easier to fit around them than a circuit with a different exit; see route shapes if that distinction is new.
