Checking the route

The Gran Cono visit is an uphill walk from Quota 1000 to the permitted crater viewpoints. It suits a day when seeing the volcanic rim matters more than covering a long mountain route. The gray volcanic ground and the view into the crater are the main experience; the Gulf of Naples panorama depends on visibility.

Use the Ercolano entrance and return there. A general map showing a complete loop or a second entrance is not enough to justify a through-walk: a park notice dated June 28, 2026 closes the Rifugio Imbò–Quota 1050 section from June 27 until further notice. Stay with the route allowed by staff on your date.

Buy the crater visit before the parking

The park’s current Italian visit page directs visitors to Vivaticket, its authorized ticket seller. Entry requires online pre-purchase for a date and time. Book that first, then arrange parking or transport. The park explicitly recommends this order.

Ordinary tickets and last-minute tickets have different access windows. The current Italian protocol allows ordinary entry up to two hours either side of the ticket time, within operating limits; last-minute tickets allow 30 minutes before to 15 minutes after. Do not use either allowance to plan a late start. The published October access window is 9 am–4 pm, and the visit must finish within one hour of last access. Ask the ticket service if your intended timing leaves enough time for the permitted walk.

Last-minute tickets are released 30 minutes before each slot and can be bought only through the Wi-Fi near the entrance. They are named tickets: enter each visitor’s name as it appears on their identity document, bring the documents and keep the purchaser with the visiting group. Minors without ID must be accompanied by an identifiable adult. Availability is limited, so use advance booking for a planned visit.

The shortest Quota 1000 out-and-back has a two-hour maximum under the protocol. Group accompaniment by the permanent volcano guide service is mandatory above 1,000 m; this is not permission to wander independently around the entire rim. The high northern and eastern summit route remains prohibited without express authorization.

Include the road before and after the crater

If driving, use the municipal parking at Quota 800. There is no visitor parking at Piazzale Quota 1000. The park describes a 1.8 km road approach, about 30 minutes on foot, or a municipal shuttle. Confirm the shuttle’s operation before relying on it; walking both road legs adds 3.6 km outside the crater visit.

Return down the permitted crater path to Quota 1000, then descend to the same parking by your confirmed shuttle or the road walk. Keep that final leg in your transport plan. The trailhead currently has no public toilets, so deal with that before the climb.

For a public-transport visit, the park identifies EAV connections via Ercolano Scavi or Pompei–Villa dei Misteri. Its older linked bus PDF is not a current timetable: use EAV’s date-specific service information and confirm your final downhill departure before buying a tightly timed connection.

Check the alert, not just the seasonal hours

Ticket sales and entry close automatically under regional orange or higher weather alerts. The October 9 notice extended one closure to October 10 at 3 pm; it does not establish a closure on October 18 or a guarantee of reopening. Read the park’s latest alerts before traveling. Wind, poor visibility and wet volcanic footing can change whether this is the day you want. A sensible turnaround plan also leaves time for the road below the ticket gate.
