Checking the route

Val di Mello is a valley walk beneath large granite walls, with a stream, pools and groups of old stone cabins. Park in San Martino and walk the approach; vehicle passes into the valley are limited. Keep your day on the valley floor unless you have separately planned the climb above Rasica.

The lower route gives you the contrast that defines the place: water and meadows below climbing faces. The presence of climbers does not make the walking route a climbing itinerary.

Park in the village, then walk into the reserve

The Val Masino tourism FAQ for the 2026 season recommends parking in San Martino and visiting the valleys on foot. It identifies parking by the Infopoint at the village entrance and at the sports field at the end of Via Vanoni. Pedestrian access is free. The same FAQ limits normal car access into Val di Mello to 40 vehicles a day with a tourist pass; do not build your visit around obtaining one after arrival.

From San Martino, walk to the car parking area at the entrance of the valley. The official valley description estimates about 20 minutes for that approach. From there its mule track begins by Gatto Rosso at Ca’ Panscer. After the first rise comes the Qualido lake, formed after a landslide in 2009.

Treat the lake as a useful first destination, then decide whether to continue along the valley toward the cabins at Rasica. The time from the village to the valley entrance is not a time for the entire outing. Every step beyond that entrance still needs to be walked back.

Stop before the day changes character

Rasica is a sensible boundary for a valley-focused visit. The official itinerary continues above it toward Alpe Pioda on hairpin turns and a steeper ascent. Reaching the cabins does not make that upper route an automatic extension.

For the simplest return, retrace the mule track to the valley entrance and then to San Martino. The tourism board also describes a return on the opposite side of the stream via a small bridge near Rasica, with a descent toward the sports center. Only take that alternative if it is signed and open; the out-and-back keeps your finish unambiguous. Pick a turnaround time that includes the village approach, not just the part beyond the reserve entrance.

In October, carry food rather than depending on seasonal refreshments, and check the Val Masino notices and mountain weather before setting off. If ice, snow or a closure interrupts the valley track, turn back there. A village-based walk leaves you a straightforward return without having to reach a hut or catch a lift.
