Monterosso to Vernazza: Terraces Above the Sea
Plan this coastal hike for a confirmed open day, with the Monterosso approach, walking card and train return clear.

When the trail is confirmed open, Monterosso to Vernazza works as a one-way hike with a rail return. You climb above the coast, cross cultivated terraces and descend into Vernazza’s harbor rather than retracing the hills. It is a walking day with stone steps and narrow, exposed stretches; the villages’ railway connection does not make the trail a promenade.
For October 18, 2026, choose a village visit instead. The park’s October 17 weather alert, effective from midnight on October 18, asks visitors to stay off its trail network and anyone already hiking to return to a settlement. Follow subsequent official updates before choosing a later walking date.
There is also an unresolved route-status conflict: a September 10 notice closed the Corniglia–Vernazza–Monterosso section pending geological checks, while the route profile still carries an August entrance notice. That profile is insufficient confirmation of reopening. Ask a park infopoint to confirm this exact section before buying a walking card or starting; the park lists infopoint@parconazionale5terre.it and +39 0187 762600.
One section, one direction
The park’s detailed trail page describes SVA 592-4 in the opposite direction, Vernazza to Monterosso. Its published length is 3.668 km; its return estimate, which corresponds to Monterosso to Vernazza, is 2 hours 15 minutes. Treat that as trail time, then add the station approaches, stops and time in Vernazza. The park classifies this itinerary EE, for experienced hikers.
The appeal is the changing relationship between the settlements and the slope: vineyards and old lemon groves occupy the terraces, while the route rises and falls above the sea. Stairs are part of that landscape. Wear footwear with grip, carry water and avoid making the crossing in unsuitable weather.
Separate the walking card from the train home
Once the park confirms the crossing is open, check its Monterosso approach too. The August 24 municipal order closed the Servano approach while retaining Via Corone access; that entrance arrangement does not establish that the whole crossing is open. Follow the park’s current instructions from Monterosso station through the old-town side to the permitted entrance, then SVA signs toward Vernazza. At the finish, walk through the village to Vernazza station for a train back to Monterosso or onward to your base. Check the rail service for your date before starting.
Use the official Cinque Terre Card pages to choose between the Trekking and Train products. Do not assume a walking-only card pays for the return railway journey. Compare the product’s listed coverage with the trains you actually need.
The park can apply temporary direction controls and weather closures. Reopen its trail status and notices before leaving the village; an older one-way calendar does not establish the rule for your October date. If the crossing is closed, take the train to Vernazza and visit the harbor instead of substituting an unplanned high trail. The point-to-point planning guide explains how to keep a missed connection from turning into an unwanted second hike.
