Adolf Munkel Trail: A Loop Beneath the Odle Peaks

Follow the Zans loop through forest and alpine pastures, without confusing it with the longer descent to Ranui.

Checking the route

The Zans loop gives you the Adolf Munkel Trail’s forest, alpine pastures and close views of the Odle’s north faces while finishing where you began. It is the practical option if your car or return bus is at Zans, also called Zannes. The longer route to Ranui has a different finish.

Larch woods and open meadows break up the rock scenery. Around Gschnagenhardt and Geisleralm, the peaks rise above pasture rather than a summit scramble. The wooden loungers at the “Dolomites Cinema” above Geisleralm are a viewing area; reaching the huts does not commit you to climbing the mountains behind them.

Follow the shorter itinerary

The South Tyrol tourism route description explicitly gives a 9 km, roughly three-hour loop using trails 6, 35 and 36. From the Zans parking area, follow 6 toward Tschantschenon to the bridge, then turn right onto 35. Continue toward Gschnagenhardt Alm and Geisleralm, then take 36 via Dusleralm back to Zans.

The same page also describes a longer route continuing to Broglesalm and down trail 28 to Ranui. Its overview figures belong to that broader outing. Use the loop’s own description when deciding whether the walk fits your day. Three hours is a published walking estimate; add your stops.

Get to Zans and leave from Zans

By car, travel through the Villnöss/Funes valley to the paid Zans parking area. The route page recommends reserving parking in high season through the Odles tourism office. By public transport, search the Südtirolmobil journey planner for Zanserhütte, the stop named by the tourism board, and select both arrival and return for your date. The loop brings you back to the same trailhead.

Carry lunch and water even if a hut stop is part of the appeal. Hut names on a summer route are not confirmation of October opening. Ask the Odles office about current conditions and the specific huts you intend to use; its published contact is info@odlesdolomites.com.

An October decision

This is an alpine outing, despite its position below the highest rock. Snow, ice and shorter daylight can change the summer walk. Do not treat a winter snowshoe description as permission to follow the ordinary summer loop in any conditions. If it is unsuitable, keep your visit in the valley instead of continuing uphill simply because you have reached Zans. Reading the route shape and finish is particularly useful here: the loop and Ranui crossing share a name but solve different days.
