Torc Waterfall: A Short Visit through Mossy Woods

Choose the short waterfall approach for limited walking while respecting the park’s request to leave scarce nearby spaces for visitors who need them.

Torc is worth visiting for the water breaking over boulders inside a close frame of moss and woodland. The Owengarriff River drains the Devil's Punchbowl on Mangerton Mountain before reaching this cascade. You do not need to climb Torc Mountain to see the waterfall.

For limited walking, Tourism Ireland places a car park about five minutes from the falls. Use the signed waterfall approach from the nearby lower parking area, see the cascade and retrace it to the same car. Five minutes is an approximate approach, not the total time for parking, walking, stopping and returning.

Decide whether the nearby start suits you

Killarney National Park asks visitors to use larger car parks where possible and leave small lots at places such as Torc for people with limited mobility or access difficulties. The short parking-based visit is particularly useful when a longer approach is unsuitable for your group. A scarce space is not a booking: if unavailable, do not improvise roadside parking or assume a larger lot is equally close.

For a longer walk, arrange a separate outing with its own mapped start and return. The park's Dundag-to-Torc profile and Tourism Ireland describe its distance differently, so the short visit should not inherit a promised 2.5 km total. Our guide to reading a trail description explains why the named start matters as much as its headline length.

Let the cascade be the destination

Return along your approach. Steps beside the cascade lead to a further viewpoint but add climbing; seeing the water from below is a complete visit. Seasonal toilets are a short uphill walk from the lower car park, so confirm availability if essential.

The park information page directs visitors to its social channels for roadworks and Ranger Base, 064 6635215, for day-to-day issues such as flooding. Check before travel. Wet woodland ground can change the ease of a short walk; the five-minute approach is not a step-free route promise.
